A few thoughts about the Steroid Hearings in Congress
or more specifically, the Congressional sub-committee.
I realize this post is a bit late, but I have been busy working and haven't had a lot of time to hang around DU or any other web site. Be that as it may, I believe that these hearings were a colossal waste of time and more importantly, taxpayer money, and as a taxpayer, I am offended. I am a huge baseball fan, always have been, always will be in all likelihood, and don't want to see players juiced up on steroids. But what right does the government have to step into a privately owned enterprise and tell them that they are "naughty naughty"? The one guy, whose name I forget at this time but I KNOW he was a republican, asked Selig something about giving second and third chances to offenders. This guy is obviously anti-Union, as the agreement was collectively bargained between MLB and the Players Association. I guess this redneck just doesn't get the idea of bargaining, give and take. I guess he also thinks that a minor offense like a ballplayer taking steroids and screwing up his own life, should result in a lifetime ban or something. I am going to try and gather names of the members of this insane committee and email every one of them, including Waxman telling them that they should probably worry more about war, health care, education, poverty, and numerous things that are far more important than whether some baseball players took steroids.
Note-when I said minor offense like a player taking steroids, I meant in the overall picture of the world. There are a lot more important things going on than that. One more note to mods-if this is in the wrong forum, sorry.

1. Hell, I agree. What industry/workplace
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 07:46 AM by Stew225
doesn't involve a substantial percentage of its employees using "performance enhancing drugs"?

I would suggest that there's a good amount of people on antidepressants, anxiety, meds, pain meds, and God knows what "illegal" substances. Technically speaking, Babe Ruth enhanced his performance with beer. Does THAT deserve an asterisk?

By the way, anybody know if members of Congress have to submit to drug tests? If they do, perhaps at the beginning of their terms, I doubt that random testing is something they would vote into their cute little job package.

These morons in Congress are quintessential hypocrites!

Furthermore, Mark McGwire has done a lot lately in the area of working with children. Isn't that something for which he should be remembered more than for his big juiced up bat?

Additionally, I've heard that hundreds of players used steroids. How come they all didn't achieve what McGwire and Bonds did? There must be some skill in there involved, eh?
