4. I remember
that was in the day people didn't interfere in others lives. And the news media actually covered it accordingly.

5. I was a kid at the time
Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 08:02 PM by cynatnite
I remember my grandmother saying she didn't want to be kept alive like that and my grandfather agreeing and telling her he didn't want it either.

That's the most I remember, though...oh, and I think they made a movie about her, too.

9. You are welcome. I don't know what triggered the memory, but
I do remember when this case was in the news.

7. I sure remember her name but
not the specifics. Sounds like her Parents wanted her to have dignity in death.

13. I think I was in High School - the similarities are striking, though.
Again, I don't know why I suddenly made the connection, but I did - thanks to you and your questions.

10. I almost did a post on it today, but there are some
differences. However, the government interference in what should be a medical decision between doctors and family is the same.

11. I think I remember
Did she not supposedly take Valium and alcohol at the same time. Was on life support for very long time until her parents had mercy on her?

22. Her parents wanted the respirator removed when
it was determined that she wouldn't get better, but they had to go to court to get an order to do so and that took years. She did live for years after without the respirator although she was kept hydrated. Her parents were able to move her to a nursing home then though until she died. She never regained consciousness.

14. That's why I support allowing the court's orders to be carried out
unfortunately, I might have to leave the Deocratic Party because the assholes in the Democratic PArty are more interested in support DeLay's position that thee state owns all of us and decides when we can live and when we can die.

16. I remember
Someone else posted about that case awhile ago, when the Schiavo debate first heated up. Imagine what the coverage would have been like today? IIRC, the right to lifers were heated up then, too.

18. What do you remember?
I think it was the first case of it's kind - pitting modern technology against what nature would have decided.

19. I was only a kid when it happened.
I remember our teacher talking about it in class, and reading an article about it. I also remember when someone else linked to it here mentioning the opposition to removing her breathing tube.

It's even closer to the Schiavo case.
