see the breathtaking expanse of America? see the 'spirit' of America, a huge angelic white lady with a bible, laying telegraph wire, and connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and slaughtering the buffalo and the Navajo?

see the glorious triumph over nature itself, bears in flight, elk retreating to the shadows with the Shawnee! see the white men coming with their covered wagons, and trains, and planes and automobiles!

see the beautiful spirit of America floating westward, casting the godless heathen bare breasted savages into eternal darkness, ushering in the light of enforced democracy, and freedom and equality for all white people from Europe.

16. I remember in 4th grade or so

learning the term Manifest Destiny. At first I thought "my, what a wonderful, glorious thing. America truly is special". Then I thought "how is this different than stealing?

Seeing this thread prompts me to ask the question: Is America based on a set of delusions? Think about it: Wouldn't Manifest Destiny be something right out of Frank Luntz's playbook?
