Right-wing mother-in-law gives me Dobson's explanation of values voters
So I went over to my mother-in-law's house to pick up something today. On my way out, she says, wait I have something for you. Then she hands me a letter from Focus on the Family explaining why Bu$h won the election and the reason behind the values voters. She knows that I am a Democrat since I canvassed for Kerry in the election and had a Kerry bumpersticker on my car. She also wanted to give me a letter explaining the whole SpongeBob thing, but she couldn't find it.

I accepted the letter and listened to her rant for a minute or so (I have only been married for 2 years and am in my mid-20's, in a few years I'd probably challenge her to a discussion, but I don't want to disrupt my newly acquired place in the family), but as soon as I got home I tore the letter up and threw it in the garbage. I didn't want my middle of the road wife to find it and get brainwashed.

I did read the first couple of paragraphs in the car. The letter started out saying the the media and pundits were dumbfounded that so many Americans put values as their #1 issue in the exit polls following the election. I just don't get these people. The same exit polls that had Kerry winning the election had values as the #1 issue. Yet, people dismiss Kerry winning and stick to the values voters issue. You can't say the exit polls were right for 1 thing and totally wrong for another when they were the same polls. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

And if my mother in-law wanted to discuss the importance of values in the election, my comeback would have been, "I didn't know that greed was a value."

1. My script
"Hey, Ma, isn't this James Dobson's radio church? You know, James "Spanky" Dobson, who also Dares To Discipline his wife from time to time?

Yeah, Ma, I'll follow James Dobson as my Personal Savio(u)r just as soon as I see him ride into town on an ass."

2. Great comeback. Christ cares about the poor & needy
The GOP think they are a burden who should go quietly away and die.

As the CEO of Diebold said, "he will do everything to get Bush elected". The Diebold machines in place would be enough to throw the election.

3. "Values voters" were actually a decreasing segment in the 2004 election.
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 09:22 PM by LoZoccolo
45% in 1996, 35% in 2000, and 22% in 2004.

My take on their undue emphasis on values voters is perhaps someone would like to provoke a more vocal far-left backlash against religion and take more of those voters. The religious right isn't that dominant of a force amongst evangelical Christians yet (39% are Democrats), and I think they'd like to take more of those voters.

5. There are more sides to the "value" issue
"Values" is also not wanting a war of aggression, it's wanting health care for all Americans, it's having clean air and water, it's protecting the environment in other ways, and respecting all citizens equally no matter how they are different, it's seeing to it that if our young men are at war they have the necessary tools and protection.

It doesn't just consist of the same sex marriage issue like a flyer about it would have people to believe.

8. So she thinks Dems have no values
When the "liberal media" talks about the values voter, it is implicit that liberals have no "values". Make sure your MIL knows OUR values.

-- We don't believe that people shouldn't have the right to see their mate in the hospital because their mate is the same sex.

-- We believe that blood is so precious that it shouldn't be traded for money for Halliburton and the BFEE

-- We believe that this nation is only as strong as our poorest citizen- therefore, as Jesus did, our values are to uplift the poor and never leave them hungry or homeless.

-- We believe that the aged should be respected, and therefore they should never want for medical care or lose their homes over money

-- We believe that healthcare is a human right, and is a common good that should be funded by all of us.

-- We believe that people need a fresh start if they find themselves over their heads with debt (except for 18 Dem Senators, that is).

-- We believe that the US is an important partner in the world community, and though we may disagree with other nations, we must always respect their perspectives.

-- We believe that a womans body is hers and only hers, and believe that any intrusion on these rights is immoral.

Cons believe in hating gays and women, and loving corporations. I think we win the "values" battle, frankly.

14. You might want to stop trying to control your wife's access
to garbage. Chances are that with that mother, she's already seen it and discarded it and she'll hate you if you try to shield her from it.

She's a big girl, and she can't be dumb if you married her, right?

15. This works for me when a rightwinger insists on giving me propaganda
I simply go to the internet and print at least half a dozen articles on why they are wrong. It never fails they beg for mercy and make me promise to quit sending or giving them information overload. As for the values voters, yeah, right. Acquaint your mother-in-law with the Reverend Jim Wallis, who is a good Christian and not a bigoted hack like Dobson.

17. I would just love
to cut off funding for Jimmy's little scam. He goes into churches of various faiths, asking for donations for FOF, selling his books, tapes and whatever else. So many buy into it not realizing that his group is a big PAC for the gop. He's right up there with Jerry and Pat. Defund the right I say!
