Often mistrusted for its American corporate culture, the German subsidiary of Wal-Mart has once again stuck its foot in it. Employees of the 92-store discount chain received a moral lecture along with their February paychecks: a code of ethics employees must follow or face termination, the Financial Times Deutschland reported Tuesday.

1. The trouble with stories about Wal-Mart

are that it's so easy a target, it's hard to ever come to any but the most negative of conclusions.

In this case, the article references three rules. Wal-Mart required no inter-office romances between levels(which is a good policy, but also infringes on peoples rights, kind of a conondrum), and they required employees to not take gifts from suppliers (a good and even an ethical policy). As for reporting fellow workers, it would depend on how stringently that was enforced.

At any rate, I'm not sure how sinister this is.
