Confused about the SS scam? Chimpy explains it.
Thanks for Clearing That Up, George
from The New Hampshire Gazette Vol 249, No 10, February 11, 2005

People all over the country are concerned about the future of Social Security. In Tampa, on February 4, President George W. Bush explained it for us.

Woman in audience: I don’t really understand. How is it the new plan is going to fix that problem?

President Bush: Because the ... all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers. For example, how benefits are calculated, for example, is on the table. Whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There’s a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those — changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be — or closer delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It’s kind of muddled. Look, there’s a series of things that cause the — like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate — the benefits will rise based upon inflation, as opposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those — if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.

4. He's right on one thing
"There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect"

That's for sure. If Bush's plan is enacted, you will solve the red state problem.

6. I understand. Bush is saying he wants benefit increases
tied to inflation in prices instead of inflation in wages.

That would mean 40% lower benefits than the benefits promised.

9. No, he's not saying that.
He says that SOME want price indexing, which would help solvency, but he isn't saying he wants it. Not explicitly.

His plan is private accounts, and he doesn't explain how that helps solve the SS problem.

Bush's solution for the solvency problem is for someone else to propose cutting benefits after the drains the program with private accounts. But he isn't going to say so.

That's why he stumbles. Deception and duplicity is hard work.

8. Great Example Georgie.... Wage Indexing Vs Price Indexing
as explained by Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio)in a speech given on the house floor in Febuary.

“Social Security benefits have increased over the years because they long have been calculated to wage increases, which on the average go up 3.6% a year. So Social Security benefits increase with rising wages. The Administration wants to change all that. They want to index Social Security benefits based on a price index, not wages.

“As a result, millions of future retirees will see their future Social Security benefits reduced as much as 40%. Because prices do not increase as fast as wages.

“Let me give you an example. If you began working in 1959 and retired in 2003, at age 65, under wage indexing, your benefits rise with rising wages, you would get $1158 a month. Under price indexing, your benefits would be frozen, you would get only $701 a month. So it would be a 40% cut in benefits with price indexing, and a person would lose $100,000 in retirement benefits over a lifetime.

Someone correct me if I am wrong....
I dont' think this is a FIX George.... its a scam to take more money from those that need it most.

Damn you piss me off!!!!

12. speaking as a social security recipient-
it really doesn't matter how they figure the yarly cost-of-living adjustment- the cost increases in medicare part b eats it all up anyway, so you never see any extra money anyway.

13. This is a great e-mail to send out to lists
I predict it will have a long life on the internet.

"What is the divine purpose behind journalism? Is it to be an unseen fourth branch of government; to keep the people safe from the unchecked power of madmen and would-be kings; men bred for their office through careful selection of mutated genes; chosen for the raw degeneracy that would enable them to make the really big decisions without the unfortunate shackles of conscience, decency or morals?"

14. It sounds like Bush was *sort of* paying attention at the meetings...
when they discussed SS reform. This is like the answer to an essay question by someone with ADD, or a student who's paid attention enough to discern points but doesn't know how they fit together.

Sentences often contain a verb and a noun working together, George.
