Why Is This Nichols Murders Story National News?
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 09:57 PM by Yavin4
Yes, it's big news if you live in the state of GA, but why is this national news? Why do we need wall-to-wall 24/7 cable news coverage of this story? The man killed 4 people. He was caught. He will be tried and probably convicted. Where's the national angle?

I live in NYC. Why should I be concerned? About a year or so after 9/11, a city councilman here was gunned down in City Hall. Did the media cover that story 24/7? Hell no.

Oh, that's right the city councilman and his assailant were both Black. There's nothing to scare White America with there.

1. I think if the guy were white, then it would still get coverage.
It is pretty dramatic - like in a movie - what happened there.

Nonetheless, it only deserves a quick mention in the national news. There are more pressing matters on the national level taht we should not be distracted from.

2. Right, it's the sort of lurid thing the networks can over cover
and pretend it's news, while there are more scandals in the White House than they could cover if they expanded their coverage to two hours a night just to mention them all.

The color of the assailant and victims is irrelevant.

3. There's A Difference Between Covering A Story....
and making it the lead story and wall to wall coverage.

4. Judiciary/Law Enforcement killings = top news
Those killed included a judge, a ICE agent, a court reporter, and a cop. Another cop was injured. It is like a movie because of the targets, escape, carjacking, etc.

I don't think race has anything to do with the issue.

It is developing that Nichols, the perp, has led a very stable life; private schools; football linebacker; college graduate with a degree in biology. His family is remaining loyal and insisting the man who did this is not the man they've known all his life. They want him examined for possible physical causes of this bizarre behavior.

5. The manhunt was the news
In the NYC case there was no dramatic manhunt.

Cable news over hypes everything. Don't worry, if you're tired of this it will be something else next week.

6. CNN is in Atlanta....
it was easy to cover, and cover BIG. it certainly was A story and should have been covered but... the 24/7 "WE STILL DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, BACK TO YOU FERN" shit was, uh, shit.

it had VISUALS and didn't require ANALYSIS or REPORTING.

perfection!

11. LOL That was pretty sad and lame
I think. My mother was like "why don't they just wait till they know something?" LOL. They just didn't have anything else to do. Duh. :eyes: They had to act like a big shot.

7. Because there's a budget for reporters to go to Atlanta
and cover a scene at a courthouse, but there is no money to go overseas and cover the ME. Plus the perpertrator is black, we love to watch black people get caught and tried.

8. Imagine what would happen if someone murdered a network media type
the hand wringing, the endless self examination, the agonizing, the non stop coverage....

9. I think timing had something to do with it...
Just 9 days earlier, a guy killed a federal judge's husband and mother in Chicago. It also made national news. I think it garnered so much attention also because the crimes were committed agains public servants in what is supposed to be a secure facility. pretty scary times we live in.

10. It's pretty obvious to me
He's a young black man who killed a judge and some other people and it has SEX involved. So go figure. Sex and violence.

13. Well, as the poster above said,
another judge was target just a week and a half ago...the perp did not kill the judge, but got her family...it was big news as well...The guy was white (I think) - and they blamed a white supremacist incorrectly at the beginning of the investigation - quite the opposite of a manhunt for a black man!

This is the second violent crime against a judge (or family of a judge) in a very short period of time...the news will cover this - but too much unfortunately - no argument from me there.

Race baiting is the wrong idea here though.
