Considering president Condi and her Spinster status... Was Buchanan not married? Was there ever not a first spouse?

Widely assumed to be gay, as well.

7. Yep, our first gay president.
His boyfriend at the time was said to be William Rufus Devane King, a Senator from Alabama. King's nickname was widely know to be "Aunt Fancy."

2. Buchanan was not married.

Cleveland was single when he was elected and his sister served as First Lady until he married Francis Folsom Cleveland. She was the first person to marry a sitting president.

Are all unmarried women derided as "spinsters" now, or just the ones we don't like?

Edit: unmarried, d'uh!

3. Grover Cleveland

Edited to add content.

"After two years in office as a bachelor President, Cleveland announced his marriage to his twenty-one-year-old ward, Frances Folsom, the daughter of his former law partner. The press had a field day satirizing the relationship between the old bachelor and the recent college graduate, who quickly became the most popular first lady since Dolley Madison. Frances adhered to the prevailing ideal that separated the private lives of women from the public lives of men. Respecting the wishes of her husband, she never used her popularity to advance the political causes of the day."

10. Several were widowers
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 03:03 PM by Jack Rabbit
Thomas Jefferson, mentioned above, was a widower.

Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and Chester Alan Arthur were also widowers. Mrs. Jackson died in the weeks between her husband's election and his inauguration.

John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson both became widowers while residing in the White House and remarried later.

8. It's not really that she's not married...
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 03:00 PM by sonicx
It's a factor for alot of americans, but also, she just seems to have a cold personality. Bush is an asshole, but people seemed to like that fake 'regular guy' thing.

The only 'likeable' 2008 repuke candidate is McCain.
