....did you check with some one in your neighborhood?
It would seem a more likely place to get an answer.

34. That was an ugly thing to say.
They would tell us it was a sonic boom even if it were not. We have had them before in Central Florida....they will never say a bomb landed in the wrong place or anything like that.

This may have been a boom, but they would say so even if not.

72. it was awful around election time. I have never seen so many
bumper stickers - my kids would sit in the car yelling boo *! and come home from school reporting that in their mock elections they were one of only 1 or 2 that support Kerry - I felt bad for them it is always so much easier to be in the majority. but they handled it well and never swayed. As a matter of fact my kindergartner was asked why she didn't like * and she said b/c he's a liar. it was really funny.

74. My children are a little older 16 and 13, my son made me proud,
he learned the facts "because of course his mom was working for the Kerry campaign" and he spread the truth at his high school, which of course was mostly re pugs, but he held strong and made good points when needed. He got all his friends to see the light and one parent kicked him out of her house because of it. I love talking about how bad things have gone in America since bush was elected, it just kills them.

36. FOLKS! Chill the fuck out!...
..."sonic booms" are NO-BIG-DEAL. They're prohibited below a given altitude, of course, but sometimes they're hard on the margin to avoid (acceleration-in-descent conditions; air pressure; relative humidity; indicated air speed; altimeter variations).
So somebody hit Mach 1 below the deck: the FAA and the Navy/Air Force will figure it out soon enough, if they already haven't.
There's NO :tinfoilhat: conspiracy here: CHILL OUT.

47. Since WWII. Legitimate yes,, but also very questionable.
I once lived in the Avon Park area, and I know the people there love their military. They do not tell them all the hazards.

They are turning Florida into Vieques, and they have slipped and admitted it. Opie the red-haired Putnam from District 12 has pushed this very hard.

Don't lecture me that bombing ranges with live ammo are fine. Florida does not have a lot underground. It can not long survive the larger bombs they are starting to drop.

The people of Vieques had it right. They ran us out.

...I don't want to flame back and forth with you; I just happen to know something about this subject (both the flight/sonic boom angle and the ranges in Florida aspect), and disagree with both the hysteria over what appears to be a simple error in altitude on the part of a couple of flyboys and your take on the safety of the strike areas which are WELL-REMOVED from any civilian areas, and have been for almost sixty-three years.

That's all. Peace.

68. As a rule, no...
...anytime you pilot an object beyond 612 mph (at sea level) a wave front that creates a "boom" is going to be projected, and below a certain altitude, well, it's going to "sound" like all hell's broken loose. That's why airspeed is strictly regulated according to altitude.
Seismology, it's not--the two are utterly unrelated.

I did not hear the boom tonight, I have not seen local news tonight. I do not think the Avon Park deal is anywhere near as harmless as you seem to think.

Do not tell me to stop hysteria when I have none. You are the one who started being rude to someone else. I stepped and said something.

I know where the bombing range is, also the one in Ocala National forest. I know most Floridians love their bombing ranges. I don't have to approve.

55. 2.7 TAMPA
Man! That must have been one hell of a sonic boom.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/Quakes/usvnab.htm

It shows up as a 2.7 earthquake on the USGS website.

Was it just one boom or was it several?

59. it was a low loud rumbling that went on for about 15-20 seconds
the windows made cracking shaking sounds I didn't hear a 'boom' but I have never heard a sonic boom before (only 2 years in FL) and never felt an earthquake before so i have no point of reference.

81. That's an amazing report for a very, very small earthquake
Normally, I don't think a 2.7 earthquake would be all that noticeable EXCEPT to the seismologists looking at output. Must be a function of your geology. Fascinating.

And what are ya'll doin' having an earthquake in FLORIDA of all places anyway?

Seriously, is there a faultline down there somewhere? News to me (not that I'm all that well informed on such subjects).

86. We used to have sonic booms all the time when I was a kid
Used to scare the crap outa me. However I never remembered an extended lengthy boom. It was always Boom-BOOM and then it was done in a matter of seconds.

What the FUCK was it? We have been seeing LOTS of those black military helicopters in NC lately. MORE than usual.

82. Sonic booms shake up area
Thought I'd add local news articles to the thread:

Navy jets arriving at MacDill break the sound barrier and shatter the quiet of a Friday evening.

By GRAHAM BRINK and SAUNDRA AMRHEIN
Published March 12, 2005

>snip<
The two Navy F-18 Hornets arrived from a naval air station in Pensacola and landed about 8 p.m., said Air Force 2nd Lt. Larry Vanderoord, spokesman for MacDill Air Force Base. He called their arrival a "routine landing" and said these planes usually fly faster and lower than typical planes landing at MacDill.

The jets, based out of California, were scheduled to take off again today or Sunday.
>snip<

The shaking registered on the U.S. Geological Survey seismograph in Orlando, measuring 2.7 on the Richter Scale, the equivalent of a weak earthquake. Central Florida is not an active earthquake area, said USGS duty officer Madeleine Zirbes.

"They did see it register," Zirbes said from Denver, Colo. "They thought immediately that it could be a sonic boom."

Two Navy jets cause sonic booms, surprise residents

BRIAN HAAS

Herald Staff Writer

MANATEE - Sonic booms startled residents Friday evening across the county as two Navy fighter jets streaked toward MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
>snip<

The booms were caused by two Navy F-18 Hornets flying from Pensacola, said 2nd Lt. Larry van der Oord at MacDill Air Force Base. The two jets landed around 8 p.m. and the booms could be heard from Citrus to Manatee counties.

"The F-18 is a twin-engine jet, and I know it is a fast jet and very capable of breaking the sound barrier," he said. "They (residents) shouldn't worry, everything is fine."
>snip<

Emergency dispatchers in Manatee County also received calls from residents reporting the boom. The jets are scheduled to leave possibly by Sunday, so more booms are possible.

The MacDill spokesman called the F-18s' arrival a "routine landing" but didn't know how fast they were flying or how low to the ground they were upon approach.
>snip<

Earlier Friday evening, a security worker at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport acknowledged that at least one Navy cargo plane performed maneuvers in the area and landed at the airport. More details were not available Friday night.

F-18 Flyover

People living in Pinellas County got an unexpected shock tonight. Several people called us in the newsroom claiming they heard a loud boom and felt their homes shake. It wasn't an earthquake... but it was two Navy F-18 jets flying to MacDill Air Force base from Pensacola. A MacDill spokesman says the jets went super sonic over the gulf of Mexico. In fact the u-s geological society says the sonic boom registered at least a 2-point 7 on the Richter scale. MacDill says they are checking in to any rules violations.

Well, there it is.

Everything's fine. Routine landing, two F18s. At least 2.7 on the Richter scale in Tampa, just northeast of MacDill. They're checking into violations. Could happen again on Sunday.

85. Why is a sonic boom listed on the earthquake activity site?
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 06:41 AM by HeeBGBz
It's on there with 0.0 on the Richter. That just struck me odd that it would be on there at all.

edited to add: How can a sonic boom be registered at a depth of 5.0 km?

87. We're all asking, HeeBGBz.
Reports are saying it was a routine landing of two F18's at MacDill AFB that caused the house-rattling deep rolling rumble. Last night it was on the map as a 2.7.

I understand that 2.7 is really minor, but whatever it was didn't feel minor, and definitely not normal or routine.

If it was a sonic boom created over such a densely populated area, I'd think the pilots might have some 'splainin' to do. This was felt what? up to 60 miles away or so? in both directions up and down the coast from the pinpointed center in Tampa.

I don't know.

88. From what others have posted, it seems possible that the boom could
cause readings on the seismic sensors (which are located above ground). They're programmed to assume they are sensing something coming from within the earth so they're calculations on the depth of the quake would be all messed up on that basis.

I'm leaning toward that explanation, but still not sure if a sonic boom is usually felt over such a wide area (granted it was reported that two planes created booms).

Nothing else was posted after I went to work this am. I see it's no longer on the earthquake list.
