22. That's how most countries deal with the UN.
They may do what it says in the little things, but if something is important to a country and the risks are low, who cares?

We're more open about it and have lots of people shouting it from the rooftops.

2. I just heard that too and couldn't take any more!
I am catching snippets of this speech and they sound so familiar. I swear he went back and copied and pasted pieces of speeches about Sadam and Iraq and is recycling them now. I can't listen!

8. Some info on 1559.
The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1559 on Sept. 2, 2004 at the initiative of the United States and France which wanted Syrian troops to leave Lebanon.

The two countries, through the resolution, also tried unsuccessfully to head off parliamentary amendment to the Lebanese constitution which would allow Syria-backed President Emile Lahoudto stay in power for an extra three years.

Despite strong objection from Syria and Lebanon, the Security Council adopted the resolution with 9 votes in favor and six abstentions. Nine is the minimum number needed to adopt a resolution in the 15-nation Security Council.

The resolution demands respect for Lebanon's political independence and called on all remaining "foreign forces" to withdraw from Lebanon. The word Syria is not mentioned as a compromise to opposing Security Council members.

It declares the council's support for "a free and fair electoral process in Lebanon's upcoming presidential election conducted according to Lebanese constitutional rules devised without foreign interference or influence.:wow:"

The resolution also calls for the disbanding and disarmament ofall Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias. It requested UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to report to the council within 30 days on the implementation of the resolution.

The resolution urges the Lebanese government to extend its control over all Lebanese territory. It calls for "strict respect of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence of Lebanon under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon." Enditem

23.  This part of the res will never fly, and why civil war this way comes
"The resolution also calls for the disbanding and disarmament ofall Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias. It requested UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to report to the council within 30 days on the implementation of the resolution."

Those militia are never going to disarm. No more so than any other militia at odds with other armed militia would.

My guess is that this unstable environment will provide ample oppurtunity for Israel or the US to step in and secure the country after Syria withdraws. My hope is however, that it will be a total UN effort minus our troops.

The neocon death cult probably wont allow that, though.

14. And, Convenient
The UN is irrelevant, unless we need it.

Resolutions are important to enforce, unless we don't like them.

Thumbing one's nose at UN authority is bad unless it's us or Israel doing it.

How convenient!

24. That man is such an A-hole.
I wonder what his supporters are thinking about now.

The Christian ones are easy enough to understand; they get up every day hoping for the chance to kill a few muslim rugheads. I suspect Christians will simply be thrilled at the prospect of another war.

It is the average non-religious republicrap (if there is such a thing) that I am curious about. It is hard to believe that bush is not alienating at least some of his supporters with his constant drivel.
