As a native Detroiter of Lebanese descent, I'm sure I have Aunts and Uncles that grew up with Helen Thomas (my maternal family's last name is George). This type of insult absolutely hurts and saddens me. I doubt if Ann Coulter has ever been on the receiving end of a racial slur....it's not fun.

Helen's last name is Thomas, and there is another person of Lebanese background in the article whose last name is David. Yours is George. Since I am assuming (possibly incorrectly) that these were not the native surnames in Lebanon, I imagine that there is an interesting story behind the fact that Lebanese immigrants were given typically-male first names as their surnames. Any idea about that?

24. This could be an "old wive's tale" but, I remember some

of my family members saying that when my Grandma and Grandpa (or other immigrants) landed at Ellis Island, they were asked to state their names. When they did so, the immigration officer said "that sounds like 'George'", you are now William George". I don't know how true that is, but that's the story I was told as a little girl. I also remember my Grandma calling my Grandpa something that sounded like "Rocher", which my cousins and I think was "Roger". This could tie into France's influence in Lebanon. :hi:

Thomas: a pioneer for women in journalism. Finally somebody's getting it right! The mainstream media has so marginalized Helen Thomas in the recent past. Maybe they're all afraid of losing access to the Bush administration, but as Jon Stewart noted, they don't really have access now. It's high time someone acknowledged who Thomas is and what she means for this country.
