Has anyone see the Carl's Jr. "talking fetus" TV ad?
Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 10:54 PM by KrazyKat
I caught this ad at the gym last night, but without sound. I was horrified -- it shows a fetus with umbilical cord talking from inside the womb. Although this is an attempt at "humor," it just lends credibility to the whole "fetus-worship" fringe element.

It's not yet on the Carl's Jr. Web site.

From Carl's Jr. and L.A. agency Mendelsohn/Zien -- the team that introduced us to a woman who could fit her entire fist in her mouth --comes yet another oddity: a testimonial from an unborn child.

In a spot that broke over the weekend, we are reminded that the chain's Spicy BBQ Six Dollar Burger "ain't for babies" by a wise-talking CG fetus created by bicoastal effects shop Brickyard VFX. Seen via sonogram, the in utero know-it-all begs his mother to cut out the spicy foods before he decides to "bust out of here early."

http://innocentbystander.typepad.com/innocent_bystander/2005/03/it_gets_worse.html
That new Carl's Jr. commercial I mentioned here? Well, it's worse than I thought, since I've finally just now HEARD it. Not only does the baby talk, but he warns his mom-to-be that if she doesn't stop eating spicy foods, he's gonna leave early and he "just might grab something and take it with me on the way out," and he grabs a handful of whatever is next to him, INSIDE THE WOMB.
<snip>

ON EDIT: From Snopes on Carl Karcher:
http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/domino.asp
Carl Karcher, founder of the California-based hamburger chain Carl's Jr., has been very open and public regarding his support of the pro-life philosophy. Once again though, this is a question of a well-off individual choosing to expend some of his personal riches on causes he believes in, not of the corporation he's associated with making those donations.

Both Domino's and Carl's Jr. have at various times been the focus of pro-choice demonstrations and boycotts.

1. One more reason to NEVER eat there again
The late Carl Karcher being a far-right extremist plus the greasy fries and meat of dubious quality were enough for me.

2. haven't seen it
I have seen some strange new Burger King commercials that have me wondering if the management has gone off the deep end.

I think I recall reading that Carl's Jr. is a big republican supporter, but dang, they have good burgers that I get from time to time.

3. We were horrified & disgusted by that ad! And your right, when one hears
what the ad is saying and the "talking" fetus, its slang and insulting...

My husband and I just looked at eachother and said WTF?

I think its tasteless and revolting....not only what they have the "overdeveloped" fetus saying, but its actions "in utero" and the implications and messages with that very "unrealistic" image....

I can't believe that there aren't tons of people who have seen that ad who are equally offended...

10. So you're saying he's a Repuke but not a real good one
seeing as how the biggest contribution he's got on the whole list is a $2000 check to the Lincoln Club of Orange County.

He gave $250 to Shrub. I didn't know Shrub cashed checks that small.

15. Karcher lives ten doors from me,
although I don't know him well I do know he is very charitable, as well as a nice guy who is now confined to a wheelchair. He has no input to Carl's Jr. for at least the past 4 years. They shoved him out the door after he leveraged his stock to build an entire inner city refuge for inner city kids and their families. He is definitely a devoted Catholic with right leaning (fundy) beliefs. But knowing the man a little I tend to give him a break, and know for a fact he has no input to Carl's Jr. ad's.

By the way he lives in the same house he has for the past 55 years, raising 13 kids, and could very easily afford to move to a better area.

I am not making any apologies for his beliefs or contributions to political campaigns I wish I could sway him, but the guy built an amazing business, and has always treated his employees well, almost all of the corporate people started out as order takers.

Many multi millionares live well below their means. That doesn't really say much. Who is he leaving all that money to? Why did he vote (Repuke) to end inheritance taxes?

18. Wrong, he lost his shirt and pants doing it,
he had the option of defaulting and keeping his million's by selling back to the city. He didn't. 3 years ago he did not have a million bucks. It is only because of the socal real easte market and because of the Carl's Jr. stock prices that he has recovered his loses.

In fact 3 years ago he almost lost everything. The people who took over the company have done the work, all they had to do is make the biggest burger, the heart attack in a wrapper, and the sheep made it a success, Carl Karcher enterprises also now owns Hardee's.

19. Do you realize what kind of huge tax write offs losses are?
How could he lose his shirt on a DONATION? Or did he build this for the city, one of those no bid city contracts? There is something missing from your story. Was it charity or NOT?

Isn't Hardees another RED company?

23. Yes, he does have something to do with making donations to Repukes
That story that he is a sweet old charitable guy has not been substantiated. First it was a donation, then it was he lost his shirt. How do you lose your shirt on a donation? Sounds like it was a business venture, not charity.

He is making the big bucks off of red companies and those companies are advertising for the pro lifers.

And the ad with the chick stuffing a gajillion straws in her mouth ? Dont know why, but I it always makes me freeze and stare... :-)

21. If it doesn't get all over the place/nta, it doesn't belong in your
womb.

So, the old gent has a passle of kids and a heart of gold. The business he founded is taken over and the corporate consultant mercenaries devise a series of disgusting and ever disgustinger commercials.

Back to the "if it doesn't get all over the place" days of malevolent yet fetching brad pitts with big buns and broken down cars, the panting young office clones falling over each other to leer through binocs at a woman splattering herself with sauce, the sneering post-ironic male voiceover-- sex and violence sells baby! And the man is ALWAYS on top. The woman is only a prop. The snotty, uber-privileged, masters of the universe "Six Dollar Burger." And always that damn ejaculatory sauce!

So here they are "pushing the envelope" literally, the envelope of Life, a living (computer-animation) woman getting her buttons pushed from inside by a little MAN with a belligerent swagger from his end of the umbilical cord. A snotty little MAN'S voice, threatening his digital mother telling her:

"I might just come outta here backwards. YOU'D BE WALKIN FUNNY FOR A WEEK."

On prime time. When your kids are watching. Your girls. Your boys.

Boycott these bastards.
