Did Bush really say this about democracy?
In calling for the complete withdrawal of Syria from Lebanon, President Bush said "It is not possible to establish a democracy when a country is occupied by a foreign force".

This was read on the air last night on KGO by Ray Taliaferro. It was an email from a listener. I have searched google, but didn't find anything.

If you would like to hear it, go to www.kgoam810.com/ --> click on archives --> Ray Taliaferro --> 2am.
On the realplayer, it is at 31:42

Thanks for any help.

"The world is speaking to Syria with one voice: We want that democracy in Lebanon to succeed. And we know it cannot succeed so long as it is occupied by a foreign power. There are no half-measures involved. We mean complete withdrawal, no half-hearted measures."

Lebanon is a democracy,” he said.  “Lebanon is a democracy, and we strongly support that democracy. I was pleased that Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia sent the very same message.  The world is beginning to speak with one voice.  We want that democracy in Lebanon to succeed, and we know it cannot succeed, so long as she is occupied by a foreign power.  And that power is Syria."

7. I dunno. bush's radio address?
Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 09:24 PM by tuvor
There's some implications here, but nothing concrete.

Smells hypocritical enough to me, though, that you might want to read at least the first paragraph:

President's Radio Address

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. In the short time since I returned from my trip to Europe, the world has witnessed remarkable developments in the Middle East. In Lebanon, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in peaceful protest over the brutal assassination of former Prime Minister Hariri. For years, the Lebanese people have suffered from the aftermath of a horrific civil war and occupation by Syria. Lebanese citizens who have watched free elections in Iraq are now demanding the right to decide their own destiny, free of Syrian control and domination. Syria has been an occupying force in Lebanon for nearly three decades, and Syria's support for terrorism remains a key obstacle to peace in the broader Middle East.

8. I'd love to see confirmation of this
Unfreaking-believable!

Does he even know what he says? He absolutely has a complete disconnect with reality.

My husband thinks he heard something about it on Morning Sedition. How do we find a source for such things?

12. Bush also got mad because Syria would give a time table
on the withdrawal of their troops. I find that funny due to the fact that he won't give a time table on withdrawal of our troops either.

14. We all need to flood our blogs with this quote
I'm also going to email a bunch of sites like Democracy For America & Media Matters with the links and quote. I know he won't get booted, but it might wake up a few more people out there to see the light.

20. Yes and he truly is THE STUPIDEST MFer, isn't he.
Lebanon can't have democracy (they ain't gonna have one, regardless) with 14,000 foreign troops occupying the country.

But Iraq CAN have a democracy (they don't want, and they won't get, regardless) while 150,000 US and 30,000 other foreign troops are occupying the country.
