Is lobster the Achille's heel of the religious right?
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 06:29 PM by Ravy
I saw this link in a DU post the other day, and I think it really has merit. Have you seen GodHatesShrimp.com?

When the religious right starts spewing their old testament hatred, I think progressives should picket Red Lobster.

Sure, I love the shrimp/three-ways as much as the next guy, but the beauty of this is, we DON'T have to stop eating there! Just like the TV evangelists who have their sexual quirks... we can preach, but we don't have to practice!

What better way to demonstrate people's ability to pick and choose their way through the Bible.

We should be able to faux-fundamentalize with the rest of them.

1. I think it's a great idea.
No telling how many freaking fundies head for that place after church on Sundays (or Wednesday nights!)

4. Another thing to do
is ask fundamentalist Christians why they are concentrating on Old Testament law and Paul's writings and neglect the actual words of Christ.

5. Debate is futile
I asked fundies who suppored their hatred of gays (to cite but one issue) w. appropriate bible quotes if they ate pork or lobster, and had appropriate proscriptive biblical verses handy. Did not get very far. Conversations would get abruptly terminated.

But picketing Red Lobster is brilliant idea. It would short-circuit their little brains.

9. Picket Gillette
Since god hates razors as well (scissors are ok).

Don't forget about all the clothing manufacturers who fail to put tizzit on their shirts.

Also, when the preacher is up their preaching in a cheap suit (or even some expensive ones), he's mixing flax and wool, another issue.

How about the abhorant evil of the cheesburger or the peporroni pizza. Don't forget about the evil of operating your car on sunset Friday - Saturday (or even on Sunday if they want to debate that), or cooking, or...

They pick and choose what they want to out of their bible.

7. Answer
Fundies believe Jesus lived and died solely to forgive us of our "sins" and act as a free ticket into heaven if you believe that is the meaning of his life. They consider his teachings neat but not essential. Basicly, fundies are Jews that believe in Jesus without the Jewish culture and tradition. They are perverting Christianity which can do better without Protestantism (raised in it) and hell-bound philosophers.

6. You forgot their favorite loophole
"Well, er, uh, didn't the NT say it took the place of all those OT laws? Why should we follow laws we don't like? We're Christians!"

Then you hit them with the golden rule and the beatitudes and ask them why the hell they're all howling about those Old Testament commandments and why they think they have carte blanche to mistreat any human being that is guilty of some sin they have never, ever considered committing in their entire lives.

8. "Cafeteria Christians" is the term you're looking for
Picking and choosing their favorite Bible references, no matter how obscure as justification for their own hatred.

10. That used to be my favorite comeback
to fundies and their "the bible says...." Mention the seafood in Leviticus and the brows furrow a bit as they try to think. It was painful just watchin' 'em. ;)

12. Be careful, you may run into one that agrees with you.
You'll go up to them and say, "Well then, should you not eat shrimp?" And they'll say, "Exactly!"
