Making his case or spreading lies at my alma mater

Surrounded by charts which showed the Social Security Trust Fund moving into the red by 2018, the president painted a bleak picture of what lies ahead, even if reforms are made.
"The government can't possibly pay the promises we have made as you've seen from the charts," Bush said Friday during an appearance at the Joyce Center. "It's impossible to do so."
The president also used his visit to South Bend to hammer home the message that retirees and those about to retire won’t suffer if he is successful in his proposal to allow younger Americans to divert some of their payroll taxes into personal accounts that they can use to better feather their own retirement beds.
It is a message that Republicans have been at pains to get out in an effort to counter what they feel are efforts by opponents to scare senior citizens into believing they will suffer if the president’s plan is adopted.
Although the 5,000 tickets handed out for the president’s visit to the Joyce Center were given to various schools and groups on a non-partisan basis, the crowd cheered the president when he arrived and was generally enthusiastic.Note: the Joyce Center seats over 11,000 for basketball games and Bush only go 5,000 area residents to show up.
