Something totally morbid just crossed my mind. (about death)
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 08:01 PM by HypnoToad
Are there any websites that look at a previous year's death count, that also categorize it?

Here's the morbid bit: I'm curious to find out if suicides have overtaken murders yet.

And if it has, has anybody else been as morbid as me in thinking the same thing?

Edit: Subject line

2. Oops. Just currected it. And,
if such charts exists, I'm going to use them as propaganda.

Hell, the numbers are reality. Therefore they are not propaganda. Real life affects the number of people who kill themselves.

Therefore, with 9/11 being rammed everywhere, bullshit hyping of terrorism, corporate crime, the near-death of the US Economy, and more, I can see how MANY have committed suicide AND how these suicides are the FAULT of the corporate and government criminals in charge.

In the end, is it a suicide when external forces convince a person to take his/her own life? After all, some people do tell the mugger or robber "go ahead and shoot".

7. Isn't your subject line redundant?
Morbid things are automatically about death.

8. I like being redundant. It's what keeps me from going insane.
Well, even more insane... }(

13. You are incorrect. Morbid things are not "automatically about death".
Look up morbid in any dictionary. The definition could apply equally to the current administration: related to disease, unwholesomeness, sickliness, etc.

9. How would you compile data on the reason someone killed themself?
I don't think I have ever seen anything like that...it is seldom reported... or even known in many cases.

3. Your not ALONE
I think allot about it, whales turn to the beach, some say because of our actions in the sea. they really can't survive. I say, for us, stay, because we are the ones that can make the changes, not only for ourselves but for our children, and what is death, we're all going there, but in reality it just another another thought.

Oil - production:
75.34 million bbl/day (2001 est.)
Oil - consumption:
75.81 million bbl/day (2001 est.)

And all the years given suggest this was back in 2003,

11. Welcome to DU! Also,
I have no intention of finding my "off" switch. I'd be less than human to kill myself unless I was terminally ill, which seems unlikely for any time soon. :-) But I appreciate the concern.

12. Well you just never know
If that time ever comes there may well be a caregiver that will shoulder all of your worries and your fears, and will put You, before themselves, above you, whats in it for them? can't say, even if I could. so that you can go on on your journey, we think life is hopeless where there is no hope, but we're not alone. that's all I'm saying.

6. Recording suicides
The number of suicides is deceptive, in part because such deaths are still often recorded as accidental in order to save the family heartache. Additionally, many suicides look like accidents, such as the person who mysteriously drives off the road and into a brick wall. Did he fall asleep at the wheel, or did he finally give up?

14. That's not so morbid. This is morbid.
Everybody alive on the Earth today will be dead in the year 2030.

And 125 years is a drop in the bucket of geologic time.

If you're 33, you are halfway to the grave, assuming you die at 66. Even if you live to 99, you're a third of the way there.

Funny how "middle age" comes not in the middle of a lifetime, but in the middle of its latter half...

Now THAT shit is morbid.

16. Suicides do outnumber murders

Not that I could find you a source, but that's the way it's been explained to me. The ratio is something like 2:1 or 3:1. Part of it is class connected- murders become abruptly rarer above the blue collar/white collar line and increasingly frequent with larger degree of poverty and relative economic competition. That's why murders of white collar folks are headline news and those of poor people rarely are.

Suicide is relatively frequent in people with mental illnesses and homosexuality, and is the reason for roughly similar baselines across all classes. Lately there's been an increase in suicide rate of the elderly, which doesn't have straightforward causes iirc the studies- more a progressive sense of estrangement with society as it is today, perhaps, and the way their generation finds no closure or straightforward consolations in the present or near future to the dilemmas around them.

17. According to NIMH...
suicides account for about 30 thousand US deaths per year.

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/harmaway.cfm

Deaths by murder are about half that number.

24. Sadly, Sci-fi channel passed. Why?
Because they've got a lot of shows already that are doing well. (most of which I've seen and would much rather castrate myself with a rusty fork, but that's another story...)

Apparently, bland tv show remakes or continuances, mindless UFO-conspiracy rubbish, goofy 'reality' sci-fi shows staring repukes that starred in crappy FOX teen dramas (like 90201 (I changed the title so you won't know what it is, LOL), gag me with a spoon), and 2-bit horror is what they want to stick with.

It's like the gameshow channel. They started cutting back on the cool oldies and made their own shows; 99.5% of which suck BADLY.

And cable is supposed to be worth $60/month? Nope.

No, Dr WHo in the US will have to wait for another channel. Amazing how BBC America never jumped at the chance... or even PBS.
