I'm feeling nervous about the SCOTUS "10 Commandment" decision.
I think we can all agree that what the fundamentalists seek is religious preference, not religious freedom. They also seek to characterize our nation as a "Christian" one rather than a secular or multi-cultural/religious one.

What makes me nervous is how they will be emboldened to fight their "war for Christian religion" (although they mischaracterize it as fighting a war against Christianity) no matter which way the SCOTUS rules on whether or not the 10 Cs can be erected upon government property.

:scared:

I mean, they are successfully radicalizing the issue and inciting the public. I don't know. I'm just suddenly really very nervous about all this.

2. I'm getting a bit freaked myself
Being a non-Christian, I'm really unhappy about this.

Making me think seriously about Canada...

Not that I want to leave, but if I or people I care about are in danger staying here...

3. I think they will take into account the fact that if...
..they vote against the right to display them, that the outrage and coverage and fight from the moralist faction of the right wing will put up a bigger stink thank the left will.

4. They need persecution to thrive
If the "church" is not persecuted, then the members feel as if they've nothing to do. Consequently they seek out and encourage persecution as a means to further their faith.

The Ten Commandment issue is just another means through which they can gain attention and then label that persecution. Any open-minded, frank discussion of an aspect of their belief system is considered to be persecution because it questions their core beliefs.

7. "They need persecution to thrive"
The biggest flame I've ever gotten came after I made this very sentiment on different site. LOL! I still believe it and would even take it a step further: They need persecution to exist. (Not just to thrive.)

10. OMG! Off topic, but

12. Thank you!
No, she is a Cocker-Sheltie mix. (But you're not the first to ask about her being part border collie... has to be her markings.)

Belle Starr will be 9 weeks old on Friday. She's about 75% housetrained now... already understands the phrase "good girl" means she's going to get a treat... and believes she was born to sleep up on my pillow. (Yeah, I'm gonna pay for that one later when she's bigger! LOL!)

Here's two other photos:

11. Agreed.
And I'm sure that those that protested loudest were the ones seeking or claiming the most persecution.

5. they are doing the same thing as with the Pro choice movement by saying we
are pro abortion. instead of Pro choice. I would never chose an abortion; However, I would never take that right to chose from someone else.

Now they say we are Anti-religion. what a bunch of asswipes.

6. If SCOTUS trends the way I think it will...
The historic displays will be allowed to stay, but there will be no new ones. There is a display at our local court house -- it's been there for years and years. It isn't a statement of religious intent in as much as it has become a historic landmark. It should be allowed to stay as such.

I don't know if other Holy books have a 10 commandments equivalent, but I'd feel the same regardless from which religious camp it came.

Alternatively, I hope that if they do order the removal of the displays, they do recognize them as a piece of history and provide for them through local museums and/or historic societies.

Finally, if SCOTUS goes the other direction and completely opens up courthouse and other public grounds for religious displays, I can't wait to construct a large stone Pentagram in City Park. :)

9. If they rule to completely open up government property,...
,...I suspect there will be a push for the display of a range of religious doctrines which will just further infuriate the fundamentalists.

Honestly, as I said before, it seems to me that no matter what SCOTUS rules, the fundamentalists will be embrazoned to continue their own crusade. It's that concern which is suddenly making me very nervous.

13. Time for arms
Christians would throw fits if other religions could have monuments. If they win, it's a theocracy. Either way, time to stockpile firearms and ammo. If they can't have it their way, they're fight us in the street till we all die. It's a war that only arms can win. Christianity is a weak religion that is based on fear of a supernatural abusive daddy and if anyone thinks differently, it's a BBQ at a stake. Time is now to stop them once and for all.

15. With all due respect...
True Christianity is not something to be feared. We should seek to remove from power those who have morphed this religion into something that true Christians no longer recognize.

16. -sigh-I hate to keep bringing this up but...
It's not and nor should it be my job to sort out or weed out the A-holes from the good people in any organized group of people who should choose to belong to any organization, religious or otherwise. It is the DUTY OF THE PEOPLE WHO BELONG TO THAT GROUP to either weed out the people who are doing harm in their name, or to find another group to belong to that does and that will take a stand against such people.

Maybe that's not what you are saying so if it' snot I'm sorry.

I'm just so used to people putting the onus on the rest of us to sort through the garbage to see the good in something, while they choose to do nothing about and simply expect to coast on their own good intentions.

18. So, the comment about this being a war that must be won with arms,...
,...was okay with you?

It just seemed over the top, even inciteful to a degree to me.

19. I wasn't even talking about that post...I didn't even read it...
I'm sure it was over the top. I was referring to the post that I directly responded to and only that one.

And as I stressed, maybe that's not even what the person I responded was getting at. I was just venting. I'm just tired of people not being allowed to be called to task for the actions of people that they willingly choose to allign themselves with.

17. I agree
If I'm wrong, and they DO permit them to be used, I will immediately file suit to ensure that they use the Roman Catholic version, instead of the Protestant version. I swear, I will turn that ruling into a legal bedroom farce, even if it bankrupts me.
