Jackie Robinson to Receive Congressional Gold Medal
Jackie Robinson to Receive Congressional Gold Medal
2 March 2005

Today, thanks to the hard work and dedication of John Kerry and Congressman Richard Neal, Jackie Robinson will receive the Congressional Gold Medal. Kerry sponsored the initial bill to honor Robinson in the Senate (S.300) and Neal the initial bill in the House (H.R.1900).

In a press release today, John Kerry said Robinson is “being recognized for his legendary baseball career, his lifetime of breaking down barriers and his unending fight for justice.”

Yesterday, I ran across a press release from House Speaker Dennis Hastert regarding today’s event:

House Speaker Dennis Hastert to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to Jackie Robinson. The Speaker and several other members of Congress will be honoring Jackie Robinson in recognition of his many contributions to the United States of America.

It should be noted, that Hastert was not a co-sponsor of this bill. Of the 291 co-sponsors of the bill in House, Hastert is conspicuously missing from the roster. Yet, the press release from his office yesterday infers perhaps otherwise. It never ceases to amaze me when others step in and take credit for Kerry’s ideas.
