Mainz -There were at least 1800 visiting journalists here last week, most of whom arrived and departed with the President. Such is life inside the bubble.
There is one important part of the day’s events that may have been missed:
Two Greenpeace activists in Mainz apparently got into the center of the high-security zone and hid inside the tower of the Dom of St. Martin. They were accidentally discovered by police early Wednesday morning and were removed at 4 am. The duo planned to display a large banner across the front of the Dom as the President entered the market square.
Parts of the remainder of the day seem to have been more thoroughly covered.
The President arrived in Mainz at 10:20 am and entered the market square about 3:30 pm after Mrs. Bush had attended a private organ recital in the Dom with Doris Schröder-Köpf and Cardinal Karl Lehmann. The Dom is at the heart of the city, just a few hundred yards from the focus of the day’s events.
In another Greenpeace action, activists dropped a banner across the front of the Hauptbahnhof. They were arrested. There was little coverage of this event.
As the President left Mainz another Greenpeace group launched a rubber boat onto the Rhein and approached the Theodor-Heuss Bridge as the President’s motorcade left Mainz. That group also unfurled a banner and were quickly arrested. However, six craft were involved, not one, as has been widely reported.
I'm posting this in the discussion forum because the event at the Dom has not been verified officially or reported by any news agency that I know of. I don't 'know' if it's true, but this story was rumored at the demonstration and has been talked about locally. The local “Bush Not Welcome” protest group even mentions it on their website.
