Poll question: Both a Christian and a Dem?
Do you see a conflict between being a professed Christian and also being a liberal, progressive Dem?

1. Yeah, I follow the words of Jesus Christ
He said LOVE thy neighbor, not hate them.

5. I guess that could explain the Gannon victim cry for this week.
He thought it meant REALLY love them.

19. I think that's what appalls me the most
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 02:02 AM by LittleClarkie
the idea that these people who are so hateful much of the time think they have the corner on religion. It's so contradictory to me. They give God a bad name. One would think that would tick off the Almighty no end.

2. True Christian values ARE Democratic values.
The crap these extremists push is not Christianity. It is just hate wrapped up in a Christian wrapper.

6. I'm not sure exactly which one I'm supposed to
click on. I'm not a Christian and I'm not religious, but I don't see any conflict between being a professed Christian and being a liberal, progressive Dem.

Your categories are a little confusing to me.

7. I know. I think I confused myself in my quest to come up with good ones
Sounds like you could just simply say "They do not conflict." I wanted to give atheists a voice, as well as non-Christians.

Go with number one

12. I used to work with a lady my friend called a "pious aethist".
She absolutely refused to do a Christmas gift exchange on the grounds of her non-belief.

We didn't begrudge her not wanting to participate; it was the way in which she passionately explained it, as though she'd offend Aetheistor or something, that made us laugh. (And trust me, this group was not a holy lot!)

10. I on the other hand kinda dug my "Christians for Kerry" button
during the campaign, and the prayer threads that started up before each debate.

Flaunting is one thing (that's what Jesus meant, I think)(by the way, I find it vaguely amusing that you care what Jesus' take on it was -- I thought you thought he didn't exist) and there are times when the hard sell makes MY teeth itch, but if it is appropriate to the subject at hand, I don't see a problem with bringing it up. Otherwise it's rather prejudicial, like saying "I don't mind if you damn darkies post here. Just shut up about all that 'equal rights' crap."

If someone can bop into a prayer thread to tell those on it they're worshiping a bronze age idol, and they have the freedom to do so without being told to shut the fuck up, then I should think that the same freedom would also apply going the other direction.

15. To me my religion
is between me and my God and not me and anybody else. Sure I can attend church and fellowship with other people who share my faith but God gave us freewill. People can choose or not choose to follow. It's not right that the religious-right has this whole "holier then thou" attitude and trying to "convert" people. Religion and spiritual beliefs is supposed to be a personal matter and to help your life and you be a better person.

17. God Bless you LittleClarkie!
I am a Proud Episcopalian. Proud Jew. Proud Democrat. No conflicts there.
Jesus talked about helping poor folk and healed the sick. Seems to conflict with the Repub agenda, but not the Dem platform.

Hey, does your name have anything to do with sitting shiva, as in mourning? I've been wondering for a while.

26. No, not originally, but I am in mourning.
Elshiva is a Roman Catholic Nun's garbled use of my Hebrew name, "Elsheva."

24. Well said, elshiva
I always thought by your name that you were Hindu. Oh well. I'm a Catholic, although a not a very good one, that sees beauty in all religions & spiritual paths. Indeed, one of the hymns we sang in church had a line in it.."that which you do unto the least of my brothers, you do unto me.." My concept of God has always been of loving & kindness, as opposed to fear, discipline, & hatred that I see so prevalent in wingnuts.

In terms of politics, however, I will ALWAYS argue for separation of church & State. My faith is strong enough that I am not threatened by it not being advertised or supplemented by the government. I do respect our founders in their wisdom to include in the Constitution a provision to safeguard this new democracy from religious zealots.
