What do we know about Senator Craig Thomas? Any why is he quoting Gannon?

to suit their purposes. Put a madeup quote by a fake reporter into the congressional record -- and there you have your evidence.

with the footprints of JimmyJeff just keeps getting longer: White House Press Conferences, somewhere in the Plame burning, somewhere in Rathergate, now in the Congressional REcord of 2003. Not to mention being allowed to lie brazenly on CNN and have his lies quoted slavishly by Howie Kurtz. And then there was his knowing about the Iraq invasion four hours before it happened. My oh my, he did put on the mileage and has not been shy about opening his mouth about it. Who are his primary protectors? And why have they been protecting him?

Lots of people and groups who you would expect to be bellowing with outrage about a -- gasp! -- homosexual prostitute so near the president have been very weirdly silent:

By the way, I strongly suspect that the administration has been blackmailing closeted gays in government and other influential positions (church leaders, journalists, others) to coerce their support. I think it happened under Bush the First too. More about my theories in these threads:

20. Maybe. But I think he's an AGENT of the White House
functioning as an all-around dirty-tricks and media manipulation --and maybe blackmail evidence gathering -- man on the spot. The Forrest Gump character was just swept passively along. I think "Gannon" is being willingly used as a pro-Bush agent and probably sees himself as a clever, daring hero.

He's turning up in too many top-level security situations for too long. I do not believe this is all coincidence. He isn't passively drifting. He has been in active use to accomplish specified ends.

Whether he is a member of the Secret Service or some other organized group of agents I don't know, but I do feel that he IS a covert agent. A number of other people here at DU suspect the same thing. Here's one of the threads where it was discussed - see the exchanges partway through:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=307x49

By the way, prostitution, especially homosexual prostitution, has been a favorite espionage ploy for a long time -- it's a great way to gather intelligence (pillow talk) and to establish control over targetted blackmail victims. I have no doubt that, as with the previous Bush, blackmailing is in common use by the blivet** cartel to coerce support. Maybe "Gannon" was involved in that end of things as well -- I suspect he was.

He was furious at the attempts by Lieberman and Graham to block the confirmation of Governor Mike Leavitt (R-Utah) for Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Could it be related to that?

11. DING DING DING -- Weirdness Alert -- What do you make of this??
http://thomas.loc.gov/home/r109query.html
A search of the 109th congressional record for "gannon" turned up one recent reference from Senator Capito, and one weird reference under

E FOLLOWING NAMED OFFICERS FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE GRADE INDICATED IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS UNDER TITLE 10, U.S.C., SECTION 624:

To be lieutenant colonel
<snip>
TIMOTHY C FRANTZ, 2618 MICHAEL J GANN II, 8123 KARL J GANNON, 5150 MICHAEL GANTE, JR, 3428 PETER J GARFIELD, 9341 ...

With all the talk of Karl & Jeff sitting in a tree, well this totally innocuous thing just kinda stood out.

I wonder if, like there is fake reporters, there is fake lieutenant colonels?

Back to the searching!

13. Gannon's Congressional Rear-entry (through unanimous consent!)
From here, enter "jeff gannon" in the search box http://thomas.loc.gov/home/r108query.html -- 108th Congress (last year)
I would like to quote Senator LAUTENBERG'S floor statement during consideration of the fiscal year 1994 Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Act on October 4, 1993. He said:

The use of contract towers is an example of how we can reduce the costs of Government services and achieve savings over the long run. FAA estimates that the use of a contract control tower saves $200,000 annually because of the flexibility available in scheduling controller working hours around changes in air traffic activity levels.

I ask unanimous consent that the Talon News article by Jeff Gannon dated September 23, 2003 be printed in the RECORD.

There being no objection, the material was ordered to be printed in the RECORD, as follows:

<[From the Talon News Sept. 23, 2003>
Daschle, Lautenberg Vow to Fight FAA Privatization They Supported in 1994

(By Jeff Gannon)
WASHINGTON (TALON NEWS).--New Jersey Democrat Sen. Frank Lautenberg is promising to hold up the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill over the subcontracting of some air traffic control jobs. He cited safety concerns as the basis for his opposition to the outsourcing of air traffic control functions.

President Bush has threatened to veto a bill that does not include language to allow the privatization that his administration says will result in increased savings with no reduction in safety. Democrats are challenging competitive sourcing of thousands of federal jobs through insertion of amendments into departmental appropriations bills that would prohibit the practice.

Some are characterizing Lautenberg's opposition to the privatization as political, since he championed a similar program in 1994.

Geoffrey Segal, the Director of Government Reform Policy for the Reason Foundation, told Talon News, ``The change in position clearly is pandering to special interests, in this case NATCA (National Air Traffic Controllers Association), who have aggressively stepped up their lobbying efforts to fight competition in the FAA.''

Segal pointed out that, while serving as chairman of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, Lautenberg supported the part of Vice President Al Gore's program for ``reinventing government'' that included the changes now being proposed by President Bush.

Segal continued his criticism of Lautenberg, saying, ``The flip-flop in position is pure partisan politics--it's reform when proposed by a Democrat, but it's trading safety and security for profits when it's a Republican proposal.''

Lautenberg was quoted in the Washington Post in 1994, saying, ``The <[Clinton> administration's proposal to privatize the air traffic control system is consistent with the desire to bring more efficiency and reform to government and should be reviewed seriously.''

On the Senate floor in 1993, the New Jersey Democrat declared, ``I strongly endorse the FAA's contract tower program for level 1 (the smallest) control towers. ..... The use of contract towers is an example of how we can reduce the costs of Government services and achieve savings over the long run.''

Lautenberg justified his support of privatization by saying, ``FAA estimates that the use of a contact tower saves $200,000 annually because of the flexibility available in scheduling controller working hours around changes in air traffic activity levels.''

<[Page: S14947>
At the time, South Dakota Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) praised Lautenberg's efforts, saying, ``I would like to compliment the Senator from New Jersey for once again doing a masterful job in providing the Senate with an appropriations bill that recognizes the importance of our transportation systems to the health of our economy and fairly balances the competing demands for improved transportation services throughout the United States.''

Daschle continued his complimentary assessment of the privatization provision, saying, ``I am grateful that report directs the FAA to include the Aberdeen (South Dakota) Airport in the FAA's contract tower program.''

Lind Hall Daschle, the senator's wife, was a deputy administrator for the FAA from 1993 until 1997.

The Reason Foundation's Segal summarized his assessment of the political motivation of the Senate Democrats by saying, ``Of course, the larger picture is that both Sens. Lautenberg and Daschle supported bringing competition to government, however, as part of President Bush's plan to do the same, both senators are outspoken opponents of the plan. It seems that competition in Aberdeen is good for Sen. Daschle's constituents but not for American taxpayers.''

FAA officials have suggested that unless action is taken by the September 30 expiration of the current authorization, it would begin to furlough non-essential personnel. Marion C. Blakey, the agency's administrator, predicts more dire consequences. The New York Times quotes her as saying, ``We see ourselves on the brink of closing the doors.''

A temporary reauthorization measure is being proposed to break the impasse and to avoid a shutdown of the FAA. Two Republicans, Sens. Trent Lott (R-MS) and John McCain (R-AZ), indicated they would oppose any short-term extension and intend to continue work on the full four-year bill.

Blah blah blah -- Fwiw the "Readability Statistics" for this article are:
15% Passive Sentences
20.3 Flesch Reading Ease
12.0 Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

The latest two bits on his blog seemed to be lowering the high-bar of the journalisticism with 14%, 51, 11.5 and 12% 57.5, 9.2

It seems doubtful that he actually authored any stories. Perhaps some more analysis of all his "stories" could yield some fruit? Is there an archive of them all somewhere handy?

15. It seems to be related to Gannon's attacks on Daschle
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 10:09 AM by starroute
I just Googled some phrases from the article and found it in several places -- at mensnewsdaily.com (isn't that part of the GOPUSA empire?), reposted at FreeRepublic, and also at a site called "Inside South Dakota," under a big headline (which was not in the original story) saying "DASCHLE CAVES TO UNIONS ON FAA, WHICH LINDA HEADED."

http://www.sdakotagop.com/newsdetail.asp?iNewsID=202

I don't know who these people are, but their Mission Statement at the top of the page says, "We are an active group of life-long South Dakotans that are a not-for-profit organization established to promote and defend principled candidates who support the Reagan vision of limited government, free markets, lower taxes, family values, economic growth and a strong national defense."

Also, their home page includes links to stories like "Rapid City Journal Endorses Thune," "Argus Leader covers tail again, Rapid City Journal reports," and "Daschle's appear to give up SD residency." All of those seem to be right out of the Jeff Gannon playbook.

Was Craig Thomas a supporter of Thune, and could that be why this example of Gannon's anti-Daschle reporting was entered into the Congressional Record?

On edit: I couldn't find anything at the site to show when the piece was posted, but Wayback Machine has a copy going back to March 24, 2004.

17. Inside South Dakota
It occurs to me to wonder why their URL is http://www.sdakotagop.com/default.asp when their mission statement says they're a non-profit organization and their "Who We Are" statement claims, "We are born and raised South Dakota residents who are working class people who care about their South Dakotan neighbors and families."

Are they part of the South Dakota GOP or aren't they? And if they aren't, why are they using a sdakotagop.com domain?

The site is registered to:
Deb Peters
705 N. Sagehorn Dr.
Hartford, South Dakota 57033

She's a South Dakota state legislator:

I don't know whether there's something fluky going on here or not, but I am going to look into it a little further.

18. There's definitely something funny going on here
I don't know if it will lead back to Gannon or is just an interesting side path, but that sdakota.com site is definitely not quote kosher:

Tapio will leave office held with Young GOPs
By DAVID KRANZ
Argus Leader
published: 05/17/2003

South Dakota Republican Party Chairman Randy Frederick was concerned because the Web site’s name is similar to the party’s official Web site and because Tapio, who is listed as treasurer of the Young Republicans, might run for office. Frederick said Tapio was blurring the lines of a candidacy and its connection with the Republican Party, whose Web site is www.southdakotagop.com. The Young Republicans’ site – sdakotagop.com – espouses the Ronald Reagan philosophy of limited government and family values. The group also has purchased advertisements critical of Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat who is up for re-election in 2004.

<snip>

The Young Republicans’ Web site also has raised some criticism from people who are identified with it. The site directed readers to a section called "Who We Are." It listed 34 first names and last initials, including "Kenyon G., administration." That didn’t sit well with Kenyon Gleason, a member of the Sioux Falls City Council. Gleason, who was active with the Victory Campaign for Republicans in the 2002 election, said he was surprised to see the reference.

"I had no knowledge of the Web site, and I gave no one permission to use my name. I am not affiliated with it," he said. "I talked to at least three other people who were not contacted either."

All names have since been removed from the site. Deb Peters, president of the Minnehaha County Young Republicans, agrees there was a problem. "To my understanding, in the drafting of the Web site, it was put live before certain reviews had been done by the board," she said.

19. Okay, here's a Gannon connection
http://www.soundbitten.com/archives/week_2005_02_20.html

Editor & Publisher features a new piece on the man called Bulldog today. In it, Guckert/Gannon offers an explanation for his sudden interest in the South Dakota senatorial race between Democratic incumbent Tom Daschle and Republican challenger John Thune. "But Guckert said no one in the Republican Party or Thune's campaign directed him to cover the campaigns. 'I looked at the Senate races, and that was going to be the most interesting,' Guckert said. 'When I looked at the background, I started looking at the Argus Leader, and it didn't look right.'"

Right...

On June 3rd, 2003, Neal Tapio, former treasurer of the Minnehaha County Republicans and a temporary Republican candidate for Senator in the South Dakota race, issues a press release that criticizes the Argus Leader's coverage of Daschle. On June 5th, 2003, Guckert/Gannon writes his first piece about Daschle. It specifically mentions Tapio's press release, and it focuses exclusively on the Argus Leader's coverage of Daschle.
