Terri Schiavo and the Right to Life folks... yet another double-standard
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 09:13 PM by CornField
I've come to the conclusion that, in general, "Right to Life" people are the biggest walking contradictions on the planet.

For instance, today I had a local woman rip me up and down because I didn't support the decision made by Terri Schiavo's parents. According to this person, absent of a living will (although that would soon become debatable by the same person), the parents should have final life and death decisions.

I asked if this lady had supported Congress in its attempt to ban all D&X procedures. I got a funny look until I used the media-driven phrase "partial birth abortion." Of course she supported the ban of such a horrific thing. I went on to ask if she was aware that D&X procedures only accounted for less than 2 percent of all abortions and that, of that small percentage, close to 100 percent were performed because the fetus was non-viable. That is, the procedure is done mostly in cases where the fetus would die before term, during labor or shortly after delivery. (Like in cases of anencephaly and other neural tube defects.)

How can the "Right to Life" group whole-heartedly support Terri Schiavo's parents while punishing other parents in similar situations? If it truly is within a parent's right to make life and death decisions for children who cannot speak for themselves, then D&X procedures should no longer be a hot topic.

1. Logic won't work on them, every decision they make is emotional.

2. The people who want to keep her alive should have to take
care of her. Starting with Jeb Bush.

3. actually I think relatively few pro lifers specificly want the parents
to make the decision but to have the decision be to leave the person alive. I do have to say that anyone looking at this case should wonder about the motives of a husband who had clearly moved on.

4. Ahhh... we only support the people making the decision we chose for them.
Believe it or not, it makes perfect sense.

6. Because the Republicans have effectively framed the issue...
that's where all of their success lies...

9. The right wing is phony
on the issues. If they truly wanted to prevent abortions, they would support things like contraception and a strong safety net.
