String theory explains a basic structure for the universe
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 05:14 PM by Walt Starr
Although the number of dimensions is debatable, it's a working model that can be utilized to better understand the nature of the universe.

from what have gathered, the movie will not be exactly like the book, but that was adams's design with the hitchhiker series, everything is a bit fluid.

and it's a 26 dimensional space-time you're talking about, but that string theory relies upon tachyons so is not as workable as a ten dimensional space-time.

33. Gravity is a fundamental force of the universe
There are four fundamental forces of the universe in physics.

1) Weak
2) Strong
3) Electromagnetic
4) Gravitational

Previously, all theories would at best, deal with three of these four forces. Einstein dreamed of a "Unified Field Theory" which would work with all four funamental forces, however, he was never able to realize that dream.

String theory, being a quantum gravity theory, deals with all four and does so consistently with the exception of Bosonic string thieory which presents a model of a 26 dimensional space-time which requires the introduction of imaginery mass called a "tachyon".

The rush nowis to collapse all string theory into a single "M" theory. This, if demonstrably correct, would be Einstein's dream of a unified field theory realized.

43. That's what you get for introducing Bosons...
Little Bozos.

"Bosonic string theory which presents a model of a 26 dimensional space-time which requires the introduction of imaginary mass called a "tachyon"."

Speaking of tachyons... I just yesterday read about a huge
blast in the Milky-Way as coincidence would have it happened
on Dec. 27, 2004.

Anyway, this stuff is fascinating to me.

I had a Time/Life Cosmos series book I would read and re-read.
Had little pictures of particles in it. (Drawn like small
Nerf balls.)

In that book they pointed out matter would not exist if all
things balanced. They would have canceled out. There is an
imbalance between particles and anti-particles.

Very interesting.

They laugh at our sorry asses. It's like we're stuck with the AOL of interactive forces, and no matter what we do we can't seem to get it off our universe. Do you know what a drag it is, every time you hang out gettin' plastered with someone you only see every few tesseract rotations, having them go off like, "You guys are payin' waaaay too much for gravity. Hell, it's not even a multipolar force, and yer spending half your variables just trying to make it compatible with quantum services. You'd be better off going with your three other fundamental forces, and skipping gravity entirely."

It's embarrassing.

On the up-side, they do sometimes spring for the booze...

If nothing else it's given me some good ideas for writing fantasy stories. I was actually thinking of one last night where the protagonist hears music in the woods behind his house on the night of the equinox and the moment of true midnight. He goes to investigate and unknowingly slips through a portal that has opened briefly at that time into another universe. The music was coming from that universe.
