latest target of the religiously insane - Shreck 2

Shrek Character is Target of Traditional Values Religious Group
by John McKay

TORONTO -- The hit feature Shrek 2 joins the ranks of animated films to be "outed" by some Christian fundamentalists in the U.S., who charge that cross-dressing and transgender themes have made their way into the beloved kids' movie and warn parents to beware.

Although many people see the Oscar-nominated film as a humorous story about a green ogre and his true love, the Traditional Values Coalition has a different take on the animated feature.

"Shrek 2 is billed as harmless entertainment but contains subtle sexual messages," the coalition says on its website of the movie, a popular DVD rental. The group describes itself as a grassroots inter-denominational lobby with more than 43,000 member churches.

"Parents who are thinking about taking their children to see Shrek 2 may wish to consider the following."

The article then proceeds to describe one of the characters, an "evil" bartender (voiced by Larry King) who is a male-to-female transgender in transition and who expresses a sexual desire for Prince Charming.

In another identified scene, Shrek and Donkey need rescuing from a dungeon by Pinocchio and his nose, which is made to extend as an escape bridge by getting the wooden boy to lie about not wearing women's underwear.

Shrek 2 has plenty of company. Christian activists have also targeted SpongeBob SquarePants, Barney the dinosaur and Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie as children's characters who are conduits for a soft-on-gays message.

2. They forgot to mention Shark Tale.
Do fundies ever watch anything besides children's films, or is that all their simple brains can comprehend?

3. I love it when they pick fights like this.
It makes them look ridiculous.

If they only railed against pornography, they'd get alot of people behind them. But people like Shrek. They like Sponge Bob. They like Bert and Ernie. People see this and are much more likely to say, "fuck you, you up-tight wacko".

I think we should encourage these types of complaints, to be honest- or even manufacture them. Pardon me- my Rove-ishness is showing.

12. Sure they do-
but do you think the average person would openly defend porn? I doubt it.

6. God I wish this would get publicity. Any publicity at all
Then we could marginalize these wackos the same way they have been marginalizing all liberals for years now.

"Liberals hate Christmas."

"Yeah? Well, Conservatives hate Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and many beloved cartoon characters such as Shreck, Spongebob Squarepants, and Bugs Bunny. "

8. these people need to get a life...
on the other hand - we can have serious FUN with this! Think about it...
Ask - in your most sincere tone - if a rightwinger can possibly explain this to you, obviously you need help to understand just how someone was able to deduce a cartoon characters sexual identity and desires?

Wait for them to explain... should be great to hear a semirational person trying to provide a reasonable explanation. Normally they just say "bad" but never have to think about "WHY is it?"

Make them support the denunciation.

It ought to be worth the price of admission to watch them try!

9. I see this as a dangerous trend. Stupid or not!
They have influence as the last election showed. If they can get a prez elected, who knows what impact they will manage to have over our lives and the lives of our children and the freedoms they hope to enjoy. Already in our high schools the majority of students say that the press have to many rights to print what they wish and people shouldn't have the right to express their own opinions if those opinions are unpopular. This is the next generation of voters. What freedoms will they vote out. We have to stop this restrictive influence some how. We are the more excepting and freedom loving population in this country and we have to gain support of everyone who needs our support. They are using their numbers and we should gain numbers and use them to keep the freedoms we have before they we need protecting from ourselves and they keep trying to brain-wash our children in schools where we don't have much say so as to what goes on. Religious brain-washing and peer pressure have already gotten our kids ready to through out the freedom of the press ... what is next?

14. In the Wind in the Willows
Toad dresses as a maid to escape prison. And look at Shakespeare for dozens of examples of cross-dressing either way, or legends like that of the Warrior Mu'lan.
