I have a question about Social Services
My daughter is attending MacMurray College in Illinois. She has informed me that the college has let go all of the staff that have BAs in the Social Service area. They are saying that their reasons are the BAs are not enough to teach in this area. They must now have a Masters in the field. My question is WHY??? Seems to me to be a way to get ride of Social Services all together. Am I wrong here?:kick:

1. it might depend on the accreditation....
of the university. It would be hard to turn up this information perhaps. Accreditation agencies, which are private, but have some not clear duty to government, monitor and check up on universities.

You could make a complaint to your daughter's university's accreditation agency. What part of the country is the university in?

2. It's in Jacksonville
not too far from St. Louis. She tells me the students and staff are really angry about this.

3. You are probably right, accreditation
At the University I went to, which was a level I research University, they did not allow any Bachelor level to teach and the only teaching jobs the Masters levels could get, were adjunct. ONLY PhDs could get a permanent teaching position or they would lose their research funding and accreditation.

If it is a Social Work program, accredited by the NASW, they have other requirements they must meet as well.

4. If I remember correctly...
In most cases I have seen in the past, teachers and other instructers are notified in advance to start on the degree level that will be needed for the accreditation the institution is trying to attain. If no notice or path to summer/night school to update their education is provided, then it may well be something more sinister at work.

6. I was thinking
something like this because this just came up last night. I will have to ask her some more questions about this. Social Services was her major (teaching the hearing impaired). She is very concerned about this.

5. Most colleges I know of require at least a Masters to teach
It's difficult to get hired an Community Colleges near my house with only a Masters. You need a PhD for the most part unless you are in a field that is very difficult to find teachers in.

I can't think of any lecturer, or Professor who had only a BA. Even those with much practical experience had Masters. I'm mostly against the focus on degrees in business. I'm more accepting of requiring degrees for acadamia.
