Is it now verified that Jim/Jeff rec'd no payment from Talon News?
if this is true, then his faxing happily from the WH should be called what exactly: a hobby? an internship? a favor he did for someone?

but it wouldn't qualify as a "job" to be run out of, would it? people assume he is losing some salary or a hard earned career, when in reality he was an entry level intern fast tracked for unknown reasons.

i'm wondering because of the upside down nature of calling what may have been his last paid employment a "personal life" . just trying to figure out a good phrase for what he was doing there, if it wasn't werk.

1. No Pay????
How the hell did this guy support himself?

How the hell did he earn enough income to be behind $20,000 in State Income Taxes in Connecicutt?????{/b] note: $20K includes back taxes, penalties and interest, but still..............the unpaid taxes were over $7,000 irrc....

That would equate to how much income?

Where was this guy getting his money?

may have been his "stipend" -

As he made his real money on tips from those he serviced in the GOP and Whitehouse.

3. In his application for a Congessional pass he states he got no salary -but
did recieve a "stipend".

The letter refusing him his pass notes the "stipend".

It was not clear if the stipend was from GOPUSA - or TALON NEWS - or directly from the GOP - or Scafie - or via a Bush executive department in the gov giving him a check.

7. Golly. A "stipend."
Most intern stipends are pretty no frills. What kind of stipend was Gannon getting and how, exactly, was it being reported to the IRS? Or is that kind of info still private?

SNIP:

Discredited reporter owes back taxes
Ex-Delawarean didn't pay $20,700 over three years
By ESTEBAN PARRA / The News Journal
02/12/2005The former Wilmington resident who gained notoriety asking softball questions at White House press conferences has an outstanding tax bill from the state of Delaware.

James D. Guckert, who reported under the pseudonym Jeff Gannon, failed to pay Delaware more than $20,700 in personal state income tax from 1991 through 1994, according to documents filed in Superior Court in Wilmington.

State Division of Revenue Director Patrick Carter said the assessment has not yet been satisfied.

"When it rains, it pours," Guckert said Friday from his Washington home. He would not comment further.

According to court records, Guckert owed $9,484 in taxes; $7,697.69 in fines and $3,560.71 in interest.

The judgment, which was filed Oct. 18, 1996, said interest would continue to accrue at a rate of 1 percent a month on the unpaid balance, and the penalty would accrue at 0.5 percent on the tax.

10. Second question - Who is paying Bobby Eberle?
Here's a former aerospace engineer who just quits and goes off to volunteer for the GOP because he happened to be in DC and SAW Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. A fellow in his thirties with a big house and family is going to go off and quit a good job so he can spread the GOP gospel for no money. Yeah right.

34. THIS MIGHT EXPLAIN SOME TO YOU!!
http://www.pnionline.com/dnblog/extra/archives/001437.html

SNIP:

Jeff Gannon" and Karl Rove -- one degree of separation
Who is the conservative pseudo-journalist who calls himself "Jeff Gannon" and has a hard-to-get White House press pass, so he can toss softball questions at President Bush and rewrite press releases for a right-wing outlet called Talon News?

We wish we knew. We're on the trail, though. Here's a few more interesting things about Gannon, whose unlikely West Wing access is shedding new light on the unseemly White House propaganda machine.

One thing is that there's an excellent chance he's a native Pennsylvanian (wouldn't you just know it?). His "bio" on the Talon News site states "Jeff is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University System and holds a Bachelor of Science in Education." The vast majority of students who attend Penn State, either at State College or its many satellite campuses, tend to be in-state residents.

More interesting is that he and Karl Rove seem to share a mentor -- a largely under-the-radar wingnut named Morton Blackwell. It seems that "Jeff" also is a graduate of the the Leadership Institute Broadcast School of Journalism -- a conservative propagandist training school that was founded and is run by Blackwell and that operates on an $8 million annual budget which comes from God knows where.

and this wouldn't have happened to him if the WH was managing it's vetting and security clearence process, thereby allowing Jim/Jeff to elevate his pastime to a point where it appeared to be an actual job.

18. EXACTLY!
But I have a feeling that the only way to get access to documents and the rough underbelly of GOPUSA is for someone to bring a civil suit. One route towards this goal is the plagiarism charge that myself and another blogger are going to be writing about this week.

We'll post everything here and probably at Kos, too. I'm thinking of submitting something exclusively for the DU homepage. We'll see where it goes.

23. From what I've found, there are grounds for a civil suit.
This is based on copyright blatant infringement. I'm no legal expert, but I think that the various mainstream outlets that were plagiarized by Talon contributors could make a civil case against Talon/GOPUSA to determine if they made any money off of copyrighted material through the discovery process.

Every journalist should condemn this sham of a news agency. And to maintain what little credibility they have left, the NY Times should lead the way.

Oh....you're in touch with Mike on a regular basis, right? I know he's still grieving his recent, but if he gets ahold of you and is looking for a story, please mention this one.

26. A suit would be tied up forever...
However, a covert operation to simply take their files...

Yes, I know. We don't work that way. And if we start, where would it stop? Wet work? Becoming the image of that which we hate?

This doesn't mean that I do not think about doing things like this on a daily basis, just that I am too ethical to actually do them.

29. When I read his article about Haley Barbour (sp?) in Mississippi ...
... it certainly occurred to me that I had read the same nearly identical article in another story, perhaps of AP origin, especially since I don't go to Talon so I know I didn't read it there first.

I did point out to a friend that Jiffy-Lube Jeff is a poseur, prostitute, and a plagiarist. Apparently he hit the trifecta.

He said that when he first joined Talon, “it was a lean organization and I was compensated on a stringer basis." He would not say how much he made as a stringer or a full-time reporter. Did he receive money from other sources? No, he said, he lived off savings during his stringer stretch. "As time went on,” he said, “my salary increased."
