In grade school (duck and cover days} we once had an alert during the Cuban Missile crisis and were told to go home and hide under our beds. I guess that was better than putting our heads between our feet under our desks which we did regularly. At least with these alerts we aren't required to go into contortions.

8. My grade school had an alert during the Cuban Missile crisis

where they timed how long it took us to get home. Our mothers (who in those days were all at home) were to note the time of our arrival on a card and send it back to school with us. I don't recall being told to hide under the bed though. We were living near Buffalo, NY and it was assumed that the steel plants there made us a target.

I was in 4th grade and I know we all took this seriously and there was none of the usual dawdling on the way home. (I remember being very upset that we didn't have a fallout shelter at home. My dad, much to my mother's annoyance, told me not to worry because if the bomb got dropped we'd never know what hit us.)

I don't know how old I was when it dawned on me that the school was trying to figure out if there would be time to send us home so we could die with our families if the missile did get launched.

We hung around and took our time on purpose to just mess around. Why did they do that, time how long it took to get home as that makes no sense. never mind, just answered myself.

14. When I was in grade school...

All of our classrooms had floor to ceiling glass windows on one wall. We got under our desks and were told that after the flash we would get back in our desks and resume the schoolwork.

I wondered. If the bomb went off on that side of the school...what about all that glass?
