83. Has Gannon's involvement in Daschle/Thune race been discussed on TV?
Thanks for the link to the CBS article -- I don't recall hearing anybody discuss Gannon's involvement during the race, which is discussed in the CBS article. It smells to high heaven! This CBS piece refers to a National Journal article from November, but NJ is, unfortunately, by subcription only.

98. Has Gannon's foreknowledge of the 0-Hour of Shock and Awe
been discussed on TV?

Don't you think that the jump-off time for the start of the Iraq War was confidential information?

I sure as hell do.

And Gannon was out spreading the word of this in order to build his credibility as a guy with inside information!!!!

Hmmmmm A state secret...gets to Gannon...who let's the thing loose on the media. Gee, that not only sounds like something that Roverer would do, it sounds EXACTLY like something that happened to Valerie Plame. Maybe it wasn't Guckert, but the pattern is there.

That pattern has the fingerprints of Roverer all over it.

144. I wondered the same thing. I still don't believe Daschle "lost" the race
I believe Thune got more "votes" though. They also mentioned Gannon's radio show and I wish that would really be played up, that is 2 mediums in which he had influence not just one.

149. Yep, there's been something on Countdown everynight this week
"Tonight there are more ramifications from the "Jeff Gannon" story, one bouncing back at the Republicans because of Gannon's connection to the successful unseating of South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle.
snip
Scott McClellan has also confirmed to 'Editor & Publisher' that Guckert's first White House credentials were under the auspices of "GOP USA" — the website co-owned with "Talon News" by Texas activist Bobby Ebberle. McClellan says a White House press credentials staffer thought "GOP USA" was a news organization.  Since the controversy of credentials and credibility enveloped him, Gannon's articles have been scrubbed from both websites.  But they still exist in cyber-space courtesy search-engine snapshots.  Guckert/Gannon was also today linked to the blog-for-pay element in the 2004 South Dakota Senatorial election, attacking incumbent Democrat Tom Daschle which, later discovered, was paid for by the campaign of Republican challenger John Thune. Coincidence?"

159. A "staffer" thought "GOP USA" was a news organization?
Yeah........if someone came up and said they represented 'Democratic Party USA' they'd get a press pass too, correct?

Blaming this on some low level staffer isn't going to cut it. This POS Gannon/Guckert was given access that permanently credentialed press journalists couldn't get? I've speculated before the rove is the only one that had the power to orchestrate this entire affair, short of bush and cheney, now we're all sure of it.

rove also must have leaked the plame information, which makes him a TRAITOR! TRAITOR'S are put to DEATH in this country! karl rove has committed TREASON against the United States of America. For THAT he must pay the ultimate price!

127. Excellent thanks
But Rove's dominance of White House and Republican politics, Gannon's aggressively partisan work and the ease with which he got day passes for the White House press room the past two years make it hard to believe that he wasn't at least implicitly sanctioned by the "boy genius." Rove, who rarely gave on-the-record interviews to the MSM (mainstream media), had time to talk to GOPUSA, which owns Talon.

GOPUSA and Talon are both owned by Bobby Eberle, a Texas Republican and business associate of conservative direct-mail guru Bruce Eberle who says that Bobby is from the "Texas branch of the Eberle clan." Bobby Eberle told The New York Times that he created Talon to build a news service with a conservative slant and "if someone were to see 'GOPUSA,' there's an instant built-in bias there." No kidding.

Some of the real reporters in the White House pressroom were apparently annoyed at Gannon's presence and his softball, partisan questions, but considered him only a minor irritant. One told me he thought of Gannon as a balance for the opinionated liberal questions of Hearst's Helen Thomas. But what Gannon was up to was not just writing opinion columns or using a different technique to get information. He was a player in Republican campaigns and his work in the South Dakota Senate race illustrates the role he played. It is also a classic example of how political operatives are using the brave new world of the Internet and the blogosphere. Gannon and Talon News appear to be mini-Drudge reports; a "news" source which partisans use to put out negative information, get the attention of the bloggers, talk radio and then the MSM in a way that mere press releases are unable to achieve.

183. From the CBS article quoted above written by Dotty Lynch
"GOPUSA and Talon are both owned by Bobby Eberle, a Texas Republican and business associate of conservative direct-mail guru Bruce Eberle who says that Bobby is from the "Texas branch of the Eberle clan." "

So they may in fact be related.

I am surprised that they have gone out on this limb, give how badly Rathergate hurt them.

I disagree with part of the first comment on this "(unfortunately gays are taking a "hit" from this, sorry guys)"

If the investigation into Jimmy-Jeff uncovers gay members of the admin it will not harm the gay rights movement. It will actually prove to be helpful to the movement.

All of these folks that have demonized gays with the support and sanction of the admin will recognize that they were not duped and they will be too embarassed to continue their assaults on gays, given their love and support for the admin.

Poetic justice has a way of opening the eyes of the ignorant.

Daschle aides told Roll Call, "This guy (Gannon) became the dumping ground for opposition research." The connections are so strong that there is an FEC challenge which could be a test case on the limits of the use of the Internet in federal campaigns.

Karl Rove's Warning To GOP

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2005

Karl Rove (Photo: AP)

Karl Rove's hope to become a respected policymaker will be hampered if the dirty tricks from his political past are more apparent than his desire to spread liberty around the globe.

(CBS) Dotty Lynch is the Senior Political Editor for CBS News. E-mail your questions and comments to Political Points
Karl Rove took a victory lap at an SRO lunch at the Conservative Political Action Committee meeting at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington on Thursday. After a glowing introduction by Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association, Rove proclaimed "conservatism as the dominant political creed in America," but warned Republicans not to get complacent or grow "tired and timid." He recalled the dark days when the Democrats were dominant and cautioned that that could happen again if they let down their guard. The new White House deputy chief of staff also called on conservatives to "seize the mantle of idealism."

Tired and timid are two adjectives never applied to Rove. The architect of the Bush victories in 2000 and 2004 came through the ranks of college Republicans with the late Lee Atwater, and their admitted and alleged dirty tricks are the legends many young political operatives dream of pulling off. So when Jeff Gannon, White House "reporter" for Talon "News," was unmasked last week, the leap to a possible Rove connection was unavoidable. Gannon says that he met Rove only once, at a White House Christmas party, and Gannon is kind of small potatoes for Rove at this point in his career.

GOPUSA and Talon are both owned by Bobby Eberle, a Texas Republican and business associate of conservative direct-mail guru Bruce Eberle who says that Bobby is from the "Texas branch of the Eberle clan." Bobby Eberle told The New York Times that he created Talon to build a news service with a conservative slant and "if someone were to see 'Gopusa,' there's an instant built-in bias there." No kidding......

Who Do You Have To Blow To Get a White House Press Pass?

http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2005/02/who-do-you-have-to-blow-to-get-white.html

maybe some fun for the weekend...

"Here's what we do: we start invading the Christian conservative websites (and right-wingers who hate gays). Try to stay as "mainstream" as possible. Hit the chat rooms and message boards. E-mail like crazy. And pretend to be Christian, conservative, and mad as hell that the President would allow someone like Gannyguck into the sanctified pure whiteness of America's house. Go on Fox's website and do the same. Never, never make it that you hate Bush - make it that you're betrayed. Fuck, if a few cranks from Focus on the Family can get the FCC to criminally raise fines on indecency, then we can use those cranks to our advantage."

122. The obvious choice is McClellan
Some people say (do I sound like a Fox News reporter yet?) he's been spotted at gay bars in Austin. And it would explain McClellan's apparent lie about the timing of Guckert's first WH appearance and the startup of Talon News. But the ferociously gay-baiting (and Clinton hating) Rove as obsessed homosexual submissive inviting his $200/hr dom to the WH press room is too good--I'm not willing to give up on it that easily.

60. I hate to be a wet blanket
but it doesn't look like a story to me, it looks like an editorial- and the only evidence in the story seems to be her conclusion that since Rove runs everything in the WH it would be "hard to believe" that Gannon wasn't "implicitly sanctioned" by Rove, and that Rove gave an interview to Eberle. It's definitely good that they are starting to connect the dots, but tis doesn't seem to be what the title suggests. Keep digging I'm afraid.

Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:06 PM by Pirate Smile
link, it is a dirty tricks link.

"This week Democrats, who have serious case of Rove envy, went a little nuts and started sending around information and graphic pictures of Gannon and his porn Web sites. But it is the more routine part of Gannon's life that deserves serious scrutiny. Planting or even just sanctioning a political operative in the WH press room is a dangerous precedent and Karl Rove's hope to become a respected policymaker will be hampered if the dirty tricks from his political past are more apparent than his desire to spread liberty around the globe. "

99. If there's a SwiftBoat link, it could be via Creative Response Concepts
Creative Response Concepts was the PR agency for the Swifties. It also helped publicize Buckhead's claims about the CBS memos, which were then picked up by Brent Bozell's Cybercast News Service and Media Research Center (also clients of Creative Response Concepts) and went from there to Drudge.

Creative Response Concepts is run by Greg Mueller, who himself has a long and interesting history and many dubious connections. Among other things, he had Gary Aldrich (author of the anti-Clinton smear job "Unlimited Access") as a client back in the 1990's, at the same time that Bruce Eberle was doing fundraising for him.

I've been wondering about that whole chain of connections today, especially since Cybercast News Service just waded into things with a spirited defense of Gannon.

The trouble is, though, that I suspect much of this has been carried on with a wink and a nod and doesn't rise to the level of anything that could be clearly labeled as collusion.

Nonetheless it is amazing to see what kind of web thirty years of effort can weave. It is truly frightening to comprehend what an amazing job they have done to co-op American values and turn them upside down.

64. I'm lovin this...but
with Rove as the contact, I can't help feeling that this was orchestrated somehow for some other purpose. After all, Rove is the guy who thinks of every angle and every possibility way on down the line, isn't he?! I just can't see him as blinded by lust or love. Unless, he was doing someone elses bidding...like his boss....

71. Rove is not a genius...he's just immoral.
He will use any means to complete his objectives. That doesn't mean he doesn't make idiotic mistakes. He didn't win the election in 2000, and he barely won in 2004 (maybe) even while we were a nation at war. He is just agressive, that is all.

They've gotten away with so much crap they may have figured this would fly under the radar too. No one could have anticipated that Gannon would be so obviously blatant in his bias or that the pissed-off Left would go after him with such enthusiasm and zeal.

Perhaps this one time, Rove may have underestimated the opponents. And it's always the minutiae that will trip 'ya up.

Remember the Palme affair has some huge liabilities attached. This may also be a hatchet job on a WH out of control.

I think this is could be a case of either whitewash (literally) or someone falls on their sword.

This is such a mess how do you spin it by airing on any venue?

Wow! I have given up on seeing the "main stream media" acting as anything other than out and out shills for this criminal administration or timid non-boat-rockers, scared to death to fulfill the role of fourth estate. Imagine my surprise on seeing anything but a blogger, with the truth in hand, willing to take a well deserved swipe at the evil that is destroying our country.
My hat is off to you. The ghost of Dan Rather lives!

But by the way. I e-mailed CBS after that Rather thing went down. I told them to look at Rove as the person who provided the material to Rather. I said that they want to shut up the National Guard thing. It was not the that bush did not fulfill his duty but that the evidence had been tampered with. I smelled it then and I smell it now. Rove is going down. bush will follow later.

I don't have enough posts at DU to begin a thread, so if anyone would like to post this, please feel free to do so.

http://nashuaadvocate.blogspot.com/2005/02/breaking-news-editor-new-white-house.html

By ADVOCATE STAFF

The import of a breaking news story by Editor & Publisher is that not one, but two White House Press Secretaries have lied to the public in the past two days: Scott McClellan and Ari Fleischer.

McClellan told the press Jeff Gannon got his press pass as a Talon News reporter.

That wasn't true -- it now appears he got his pass as a writer for the Republican activist website, GOPUSA.com.

158. Hmmm...
We shouldn't jump on this yet. They're prepared for it to come out now. It should be dealt with while the gannon heat is still on, but they've let this information come out if it came out at all. I'd call it bait and switch, they strike us as conspiracy theorists when we could harm them most, so the best choice of action would be to highlight this with a less beneficial approach that could still hurt them. One they're unprepared for.

I don't know if we can trust CBS to cover this either. I think the administration pretty much owns their soul now that they put that story out and they knocked it down. It seems like what they're doing with this, preparing not anyway to defend themselves, but 'scientists' to prove that it's somewhere somehow fake...and they martyr the next anti administration anti rove hopeful.

I'd call it a trump card at best, damn good one, but trump card.

sorry to be a pest. Bigger problems.

Peak OIl, End of economy.

Taking over with miliary power will not help. Only bringing everyone into a system of local food production, energy conservation, thermal protection...insulation...caring for all. Not moving around so much will help.

rethinking what we do and how we do it where we live and what is important post oil.

Nature needs to be cared for beyond all else. Food is easy..just takes care and some square foots.

How we spend time and entertain ourselves. Doorway to more direct living.

168. Does anyone remember Watergate???
There was a dirty tricks campaign mascot inside of the 1972 campaign by the name of Donald Segretti, who took under his wing one egg shaped balding fanatic named Karl Rove. Rover has been a master at this type of disinformation/dirty tricks campaign since those days as he was taught by the master; Donald Segretti.

I am suprised they are letting Gannon/Guckert/Bulldog talk to the press, as every time he opens his mouth, he sinks deeper into this muck, such as last night's interview with Anderson Cooper, he looked BAD.

I wonder if he realizes now that they are going to leave him for the wolves in order to save their own asses, or if he even cares, that he has sold out his gay & lesbian brothers & sisters to the right. I wonder if he will ever get it.

I also wonder WHO he has been putting out for in the WH in order to get where he has been??

This is getting mighty interesting if you ask me...mighty interesting indeed.
