Shoe tossed at ex-Pentagon adviser during debate
Richard Perle, Howard Dean trade barbs

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- Howard Dean, the newly minted leader of the Democratic Party, and former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle made clear their opposing views on the war in Iraq during a debate marred by a protester who tossed a shoe at Perle.

Perle had just started his comments Thursday when a protester threw a shoe at him before being dragged away, screaming, "Liar! Liar!"

Perle, who was Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's top policy adviser, was a key architect of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and Dean is among the war's most prominent opponents.

6. heh heh
To paraphrase from Napoleon Dynamte:

"Howard, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with Freepers all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter."

To do a precision strike on Perle's head.

Perle's best barb was that we "chose a physician" to lead us. Oh. That hurts so bad, Richard. Ouch.

11. It is sad, however, that this is all the MSM is talking about...
in regard to this debate. Most headlines that I've found on the 'Net have been about the shoe thrower.

Ugh.

15. Actually, it's not so sad
Were it not for this brave protester, I seriously doubt the debate would have even been mentioned on the MSM.

On another note -- Perle actually believes there will be a square named after * in Baghdad?! What an idiot!! If anything were to be named after * in Iraq, it might be a cemetery.

16. So what?
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 12:04 PM by HuckleB
So more people will know about a shoe thrower. I suspect fewer people will know anything about the substance of the debate because of the shoe thrower, and the debate was actually being covered fairly big time because of Dean. Now the substance is gone.

17. I suppose it depends
on where people get their news from. I first came across this on CNN.com, where some of Dean's choice comments were mentioned. Also, it shows that there ARE people out there who are truly upset with this war, something I rarely see at all in the MSM.

14. To tell you the truth, I don't think the guy should have done it...
...it distracted from the debate and made people opposed to Perle's point of view look a little--I don't know, immature?

If it had been the other way areound and someone had thrown a shoe at Howard Dean I wouldn't have thought much of the person. It's not the sort of tactic to win over regular people who are trying to make up their minds about which side to fall in with, IMHO.

20. throwing shoes is a sign of extreme disrespect in some parts of the world
I think we ALL should start doing this. It's the one thing they simply can't get away withy taking from us when we meet our "elected" officials.

In this case- I don't think Perle was even elected for anything, was he?

So it was appropriate, after all. Perle has no business debating Dean on anything- not when we can't debate the DEA, for example.

22. I have to respectfully disagree...
...signs of "extreme disrespect" don't need to be resorted to when the facts are on your side. Just outargue someone if you can, and let them descend to the namecalling. Doing otherwise usually just makes a person look like...well, a punk.

Throwing a shoe at someone even as loathsome as Perle during a formal debate was a foolish thing to do. It makes unbiased people actually feel some sympathy for Perle by making it look as if he was at least enough of a man to go stand alone before a hostile audience where at least one person was a bit of a loon.

Acts like this one might make the choir laugh and feel good, but it turns off the mass of regular people who need to be won over. It puts forth a bad face. This would have been embarrassing enough if a college student had done it, but that a 52-year old man displayed such a lack of self-control and discipline is even more of a sigh and headshake inducer.

21. True -- he probably shouldn't have.
Nevertheless -- I know how he feels. These bloviating criminals get to stand up there being taken seriously, and people like the shoe guy and many more of us, including me, feel utterly helpless and powerless.

It's an act of desperation. I'm glad it was just a shoe.

23. Yeah, I know what you're saying...
...believe me, when it comes to showing self-control when talking about issues, it's all I can do to keep from exploding, I get so worked up sometimes. But, giving in to that doesn't win undecideds over.

I love listening to Mike Malloy when he vents--it helps me get through our current state--but I don't think his radio program would convince anyone who doesn't already think like he does.

27. I think it's discrediting to us to see him throw a shoe, but...
I want to smack him DESPERATELY as soon as he starts to talk.

Why the hell was he willing to justify this in public against Dean, anyway?

Geez. It bounced off the STAGE.

What a tempest out of a teapot for all of you saying "oh this is bad, he never should have done that."

We can't control everyone's actions. The guy threw his shoe, he was escorted off VERY quickly.

Big whoop.
