He said
"Well, if you look at a photograph of Diana, you can understand, but this one . . . why? Why her?"

12. Prince Charles already hates republicans
keep feeding the fire....hopefully he'll concentrate all his rage when he visits America later this year and unleash it via a left hook squarely in Bush' kisser. If he did that he'd already be the King in my eyes.

32. Beyond that, let's look at the facts...
Camilla is, what, 58? When Diana first came to public attention, she was 19. (That's less than one-third Camilla's age now.)

Without getting into a debate on the subject of conventional society's standards of beauty, isn't it all that surprising that someone still in their teens would be thought of as more beautiful than someone pushing 60? Who's to say what Diana, had she lived, would have looked like in the popular mind when she was that age? In fact, you could probably take a poll of any number of average people (male and female) comparing photos of Diana at 19 and in the year before her death (when, I believe, she was 35 or 36), and I bet most people would describe her as "more beautiful" at the younger age.

Societal notions of beauty are fleeting, temporary, and, to be honest, rather shallow. Fortunately, by the time most men get past their mid-life crisis years, they are no longer as fixated on society's standards in that regard. And, in that, I have to give Charles some credit, however disgraceful I think his behavior has been in the past. The fact is that, following Diana's death, he was a widower, not a divorced man, and would have been free to marry any single woman (without a divorce in her past) without any sort of controversy or questions as to whether he could be accepted as King. Certainly, had he decided to dump Camilla then and there, there probably would have been no shortage of woman (including, like Diana, pretty young girls in their teens) who would be more than willing to become the future Queen -- why, most of them probably would have accepted him keeping a mistress, right up front. And, with the public's dislike of Camilla at that point, leaving her would probably have rehabilitated his image in the eyes of the public. The fact is, he chose to remain with the woman who was, in however twisted a sense, truly his "life-partner." Even if, in the minds of those like Britt Hume, she was not as young and beautiful as society might hope for.

19. Beauty worship is proof of shallowness or low self esteem
It's deeply vulgar how we, as a species, worship beauty to such a ridiculous degree. So many people simply can't understand even thinking about being with someone who wasn't up to snuff in the looks department.

In some cases, it's the sign of deep feelings of inadequacy that have to be compensated for by having an attractive partner, but in most, it's just superficiality.

Besides that, Camilla's good looking, and has a vibrant and intelligent demeanor; I'd much rather spend time with her than Diana.

I never did get the love of Diana; she seemed to be a ditz. Prettiness, even to shallow people, wears thin mighty quickly. When Diana started dating the son of a guy who was, among other things, an arms merchant, it just made the hoopla about land mines seem like so much posturing. Diana Spenser was a child of ancient hereditary privilege; whether she was mostly good or not is beyond the ken of those of us who didn't know her, and the literal worship of this woman has many, many dark facets to it. Conservatives love her: she's privilege personified, and she was in a ritualistic secondary-status role as gracious ornament. She was literally the vapid princess dream writ large and for real.

35. What do you mean?
I am asking what does Brit Hume's wife look like, that way we can critique her looks. He really shouldn't be commenting on someone's look anyway. The asshole should take another look at himself in the mirror.

28. I'm suddenly reminded of Christine Lavin...
...who wrote a satirical song about the (first) Royal Wedding back in 1981. Speculating on why Prince Charles was rushing into marriage with someone he seemed to have barely known, Lavin wrote:

Maybe you got panicky,
thinking you were losing your looks.
Confidentially, Chuck -- you got no looks to lose.

;-)

30. And he never thinks to ask...
...why the media (and the rest of us) should be so fascinated with the antics of two middle-aged, inbred, uninteresting, untalented twits in England, just because they are distant relatives of some ass hundreds of years ago who decided he should be boss because God said so....

Like, hello? They are NOT 'royal'. They are just people sponging off the public for no damn logical reason at all. FIRE them all, and strip every title from every last damn one of them. Dissolve the house of "lords", too. "royalty" = BS.

34. I don't claim...
.... more than passing knowledge of this situation but I know this.

Love transcends looks and Prince Charles clearly loves this woman. More power to him, and I wish them both happiness.

Trust me, many have hooked up with someone based on their looks and lived to regret it :)
