Gannon in White House Briefing Room Before Talon News Existed
by Rob in Baltimore - 2/16/2005 07:57:00 PM

Kudos to Intelligence Squad for finding this and Kossacks for getting the screen grab up so quickly, as well as nailing down all the verifiable points. The screen grab is from the C-SPAN Web site White House Daily Briefing from February 28, 2003 here (RealVideo clip). Fast forward to 32:05 and there he is.

Well well well. Look at that, it's "Jeff"!

So then, what an interesting question we have, huh? "Jeff Gannon" is sitting in the White House briefing room with absolutely no media organization affiliation. (But some live and active escort sites!) Just how does that happen?

Not by accident, that's how.

On the Intelligence Squad post, "Gannon" posts with a link to GOPUSA. Is that a "news" outlet? Not by my definition it's not.

So Scott McClellan, answer me this -- what was "Jeff Gannon" doing in the White House briefing room before he worked for Talon? Why was he given access in the first place? And of course, how did he get the Valerie Plame information?

Lots of questions that should be asked at tomorrow's daily briefing. Any members of the traditional media feel like asking these questions yet or shall the blogs continue to do your job?

14. Any investigation by the dems in govt will be ignored.
Just look at all 10 or 15 of the letters that Conyers sent to Blackwell. Each and every one flat out ignored by both Blackwell and the media... and the corporate media did nothing. The people are the only ones that can get anything done.

nothing. I'd be willing to put money down on it.

The only thing that will get anything done is protests... massive protests. Not little ones. Thousands of people.

24. But how much MSM coverage has Boxer's rebellions gathered?
I talk to my co-workers about this stuff. Most of them are pretty big into watching/listening to the news (MSM of course). Pretty much all of them didn't even know that Ohio's electors were challenged. Same with Gonzales.

The MSM press that HAS been generated on it is usually tucked away safely in a small corner of the newspaper somewhere, far away from the front page.

On the other hand, what do you think would happen if a few thousand people protested in front of the white house? I'm pretty sure that would get some coverage.

29. it doesn't matter...
they barely covered the millions protesting before the war and when they did they LIED about the numbers.

this isn't going to be won in one fell swoop it is going to take a sustained, eternal term effort as usual.

we need to do EVERYTHING we can to apply pressure and that includes calling/writing our reps AND the media.

31. The problem is where people get their information from. Very few people
actually listen to what an individual senator or two says, unless it is covered in the MSM, which will not happen unless it is something spectacular and out of the ordinary. Otherwise it's just whiny senate/house liberal conspiracy theorists.

Democrats Want Investigation of Reporter Using Fake Name
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

Two Democrats in Congress are pressing for investigations into how a Washington reporter who used a pseudonym managed to gain access to the White House and had access to classified documents that named Valerie Plame as a C.I.A. operative. The Democrats, Representatives John Conyers Jr. of Michigan and Louise M. Slaughter from Rochester, wrote yesterday to Patrick Fitzgerald, the independent prosecutor appointed in the Plame case, seeking an investigation into how the reporter, James D. Guckert, who used the name Jeff Gannon, had access to classified documents that revealed the identity of Ms. Plame.

<snip>

The Democrats also wrote to the Secret Service seeking an explanation of how someone using a pseudonym was cleared to enter the White House daily press briefings as well as a presidential news conference last month. They said in their letter that allowing such a person in "appears to deviate significantly from heightened security measures you have employed recently."

<snip>

Scott McClellan, the White House press secretary, told reporters yesterday that Mr. Bush did not know who Mr. Guckert was. Mr. McClellan said that Mr. Guckert entered the White House under his real name and "like anyone else, showed that he was representing a news organization that published regularly, and so he was cleared two years ago to receive daily passes, just like many others are." Mr. Guckert was denied credentials to cover Capitol Hill, where press gallery workers said that his application indicated Talon was not his main source of income and that they could not verify its legitimacy.

Karl Frisch, a spokesman for Ms. Slaughter, said: "This is a guy who could not get credentialed by the House or the Senate press galleries, and yet managed to get into the White House and question the president" and have access to a top-secret document. He added: "To imply he has no connection to the White House is just not credible."

47. Yes, AND their Congressional reps:
BTW - one way to play it if you have a republi-CON "representing" you:

ACTING!!! Call and act as though you're a fellow dark-sider. Express your deep concern that this "jeff gannon" fellow is just too much, it's making EVERYONE involved look bad, it's starting to smell really bad, and our valiant, patriotic republi-CONS need to bring out the truth on this. Because otherwise it's reflecting VERY badly on Our President and many of his people. We CANNOT have some crank like this "jeff gannon" fellow making everyone look bad.

FURTHER, you can say you are EXTREMELY worried about the compromised national security aspect of this. The HORRORS that such an UN-credible individual could get THISCLOSE to Our President - what if it was some terrorist? Who let him in? Who okayed him? How'd he get there? And it's making a complete mockery of the republi-CONS' claims that they're best on national security issues. You could even say you have friends who are LAUGHING at you now, because of this hypocrisy in the White House... It's just making us all look bad! Tell whomever it is that REALLY, SOMEONE'S HEAD NEEDS TO ROLL! You can say you hate to see one of our fine White House people being sacrificed, but this is really starting to make "us all" look bad! Sob, sob, sigh, sigh.

A little acting! But you're just worried SICK about what impact this might have on Our President...

here's a theory...

What if Gannon was hired to entrap another journalist in some compromising sexual situation/s. Why else put a hooker in the press room? A little blackmail could prevent important news stories from coming out or important questions being asked.

48. This is a big development...
Some people seem to be discouraged, and I understand, but we must keep the pressure on. We need to stay away from the "gay prostitute angle" and keep working the propaganda angle. Frankly I don't give a shit if he is a gay prostitute. What I'm looking for now are payments made to Gannon/Talon News by a government agency. Eventually this might go deep enough to put the MSM in a position where if they don't report it then they will look like shills for the administration as well. (Not that they don't already IMHO)
Scream to the highest mountains, and keep screaming until the facts can no longer be ignored, mutilated, or spun in any way...

49. the propaganda angle
I don't understand.

Why is catching the government paying a (fake) reporter more important than catching the government paying a hooker? There have been at least 3 or 4 cases in the last few weeks of "journalists" hired by the government to sell a governement program to the unsuspecting public. This was followed by some discussion in MSM about propaganda being illegal. This has not proven to be a show stopper so far.

Now, government hiring a prostitute (gay being an irrelevant detail) to set somebody up.. that seems like a crime the MSM can enjoy.

50. Yes it is,
...but it does not follow that we need to "stay away" from any aspect of the story. It's the gay prostitute angle that really got my attention, and why? Because we already knew the guy was a plant, that was apparent from his questions. But who knew they would be so blatant? Either they think they're above questioning and never have to explain themselves, or, they were simply sloppy. Either way, it's the public prostitute angle that exposes the ugly truth without any ability to cover it up. They can cop the "invasion of his personal privacy" plea, but it won't stick, because he put his own privates on display for all to see, and he did it for money as a living before he fell into this lovely little "edgy conservative reporter" sinecure. And come to find out, he was a special hire. So special, in fact, that he got into the White House press briefing rooms before there was even a "news" agency to back him up...

Pfft. This stinks so bad, it's a wonder the people haven't risen up in revulsion.

53. While I see your point,
I think using the gay angle will just cause more backlash against the left for being hypocritical. I also think it does a disservice to the gay community to be mentioned in the same sentance as these idiots. After more consideration I realized that even Rice getting caught lying to the 9/11 commission didn't make the MSM scream. So if the only way to get these bastards to use the gay angle then I would come down off my high horse and admit that if thats what it takes then so be it. I just hate stooping to their level...

58. OKAY! WHO is this guy??? I mean, who is he, REALLY??
Supposedly he's an ex-Marine. The CIA recruits heavily from ex-military.

Who the hell is he?

Thanks to all the informed people here, I've seen plenty of info on his activities regarding Talon News, and now, on his being in the briefing room BEFORE they made up "Talon News". But I haven't seen much of anything on his life before that.

I assume that the whole story is: this White House doesn't just pay off the established news people; they create their own fake news people (as the CIA does) and wind them up and let the fake newsies spread the WH propaganda to a gullible public who assumes it's "impartial reporting".

But IS that the whole story? Or is there even more? And how many more "Jeff Gannons" are there out there? I'll bet there are a lot!
