This takes balls.

A display showing an American soldier's uniform with the slogan 'Bush Lied I Died' is seen on a home in Sacramento, Calif., Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005. Since Stephen and Virginia Pearcy put up the effigy, it has been vandalized twice and put up again. Police are investigating the vandalism reports as well as a claim by a military mother that the display should be investigated as a hate crime. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)

3. Unpopular speech is the speech that most needs protection
And the owners of this home should make it very clear to anyone who trespasses onto their property to vandalize their house will be repelled with armed force.

8. This is a better message than their last one.
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 01:38 AM by UdoKier
A lot of the suburban troglodytes were too thick to understand the effigy with the words "Your Tax Dollars at Work"

This is much more clear, and slightly less likely to offend, except on an aesthetic level.

Funny that an outcry AGAINST the needless deaths of our men at the hands of Bush and his mercenary war would be interpreted as HATRED for the troops!

9. Must Respected KUDOS to the Pearcy's!
I commend them on their courage, bravery and honor! Another sign that we are living amid divided, and seperated times.

Thumbsup to the Pearchys' and I hope they never stop taking it down!

14. You know those churches with all those little crosses for
abortions.
Maybe we should start puting little crosses for all the deaths in Iraq.
Unfortunately, I don't think I have enough money in this horrid Bush economy to buy that many.

18. did you see that installation on some CA beach with crosses?
They had a number that represented all soldiers (not just US) and the dead Iraqis. Someone pointed out though, that the crosses were ethnocentric because most Iraqis are Muslim.

The shoe, eyes wide open exhibit was powerful too but it represented only soldiers. Some kid in Greensboro took his dead dad's combat boots to put in the exhibit. How sad.

What is a non religious symbol of death other than a coffin that could be used for an installation or protest?

16. It's not against the law to hate,
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 01:50 AM by ultraist
but it is against the law to commit violent hate crimes. This display in no way qualifies as hate speech NOR is it a hate crime. Apparently, the person who filed that complaint, failed to look up the definition of hate crime.

11. Story covered by local San Diego News
which surprised our whole family considering how conservative this town is. The story ran over the weekend. My eleven year old came and got me out of my office and used our Tivo to replay the clip for me. What was even more amazing is that the story focused on the rights of the property owners for the display and pointed out the criminal act of those vandalizing it.

It's little things like this that give me hope.

19. Investigated as a hate crime?
Hmmm, in order for displaying such a thing to be a hate crime, it would first have to be a crime, which it isn't.

Kudos to Stephen and Virginia, this ex-soldier is behind you 100%.

I see no hate in it. Bush lied about Iraq and soldiers died. If that's "hate", I wish all hate was that truthful...
