I think the reason Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld get a pass from the Press
is they not merely hold the power right now, the Press expects them to hold power for a long time to come. That expectation comes about because these people and the Republican Army is capable of cheating, character assassination and play hardball against adversaries.By and large, our Press is made up of careerists who are there to make millions in the mold of Brokaw, Couric and Russert. The last thing they care about are issues. There is no way they are going to take on these thugs. In the end it is Bush and his gang who have figured out the true cowardice of our stenographers.

5. That's what is so scary.
They KNOW that these people are going to be around for a long time. Not just think, but know. That is what we have to look forward to. It seems to be a perpetual nightmare.

6. Yep, I'm afraid you are right Klaatu...
I think "they" intend to be in power for many years to come.
With or without Chimp is the question. Will they repeal the 22nd Amendment? Will they go for Jeb? Will they groom Arnie?

But it won't happen like they want it to. Just like Iraq, things will not really go their way, and you can only pretend for so long.

The people will win in the end.

8. Yikes! I just had a scary thought
Maybe this is reason for Pat B's sudden spate of reasonableness.
Maybe he thinks we'll forget all the other crazy stuff he's said...

9. Very likely. More than any other quality, one needs to be a weatherman
in the jungle of Washington to know not just who holds the reins of power today, but who is likely to be in power tomorrow.I think the consensus among the weatherman journalists and courtiers is that the reign of the Bush gang( or its modified form) is likely to last a long time.Should I start calling it a Thousand Year Reich, American Version yet?

By the way, welcome to DU, Sad One.

10. Of course they are scared, look what they did to Helen Thomas
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 10:19 PM by paineinthearse
Clipped from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Thomas

"In 2003, President George W. Bush stopped the tradition of allowing Thomas to end Presidential news conferences by saying “Thank you, Mr. President.” Additionally, she has been moved from the first chair of the front row of the conference room to the back, and is rarely called upon in press conferences. Bush is thought to have instituted these changes after taking exception with some of Thomas' writings regarding his presidency."

12. By and large, the ownership of mass media is made up of the
favored classes. The "reporters" are just an afterthought.

13. They say what their bosses tell them to say
Their bosses are 3 or 4 corporate monoliths with a neo-con extreme RW agenda.

Play the game and you get promoted. Show the tears in the fabric of the neo-con wet dream and you don't get reported.

THAT is what is going on. The golden rule....he who owns the gold, rules.

14. And the viewership continues to plunge...
They will continue to beg for scraps when the whole world looks to "alternative media" for the truth and context. Then they will dry up and blow away into irrelevancy.

15. I hope you are right. But the dumbing down of our population, with an
active assist from our religious fundamentalists does not give much hope. Please remember we at DU are a very small minority and ask questions that many do not even bother to think about.

16. bush* hold on the MSM is actually very very fragile...held up by bribes

paying reporters to shill for bush* programs....which essentially means that bush* programs are just crap, can't stand on their own without being PROPPED up with PAID SHILLS....other reporters and high CEO's, etc. are clearly being BLACKMAILED, as the MANGATE scandal continues that will bear out more....and a CNN executive actually stated that LOTS of American reporters were SHOT DEAD by American soldiers in Iraq, so what does that say?

the only way that bush* is currently holding any sway over the media is with ILLEGAL shills, and Blackmail and KILLING reporters....so bush* media support could FALL FAST at any minute, it's just another house-of-cards, like enron....the HONEST DECENT TRUTHFUL media people will win out....

newly erected 'pappy bush' monument in Houston Texas....where people no longer accept the bush*
