Tell me why
people are so against

food stamps
childcare
Headstart
Housing

I just don't understand. Those involved are our future. We are destroying them, is this what PNAC wants?

1. Because they are selfish money hungry people, you see the rage
in them when you tell them some, very little, of their taxes go to such great programs. If looks could kill I would be dead.

2. Lack of security....
they think someones going to get their piece of the pie, not realizing there's plenty for everyone... if they weren't so greedy and self-absorbed.

3. They are all scared to death..
... that somebody, somewhere is getting a free lunch.

They also buy into the Repuke rhetoric that these programs are a significant part of the budget, i.e. their taxes. The truth is you could kill all these programs tomorrow and the effect on government revenues needed would be miniscule.

This is how the pukes win elections, they tap into the worst part of American character, all the while making it sound noble.

4. They're just sadists
They like watching other people suffer.

If you are a normal person who has a average amount of compassion or empathy, don't bother to try to understand. You can't.

5. Something has to give
we can't keep taking away from our children or grandchildren. They deserve better.

6. It's the punitive, puritanical worldview
Religious oriented worldviews are oftentimes very punitive. The current *Christian* fundie mindset believes that the poor are undeserving. They believe children are born with original sin and need to have their spirit broken and be trained into obedience. They often use corporal punishment.

Punitive attitudes regarding the poor and children can be traced way back, but this is a resurrgance of them, that we are seeing now.

People who are compassionate, tend to be more giving, understanding that many variables have to be factored in to why a family is poor and regardless of whether or not the parent is at fault, the children still need and deserve to eat.

Lakoff's nurturant parent vs. strict father model exemplifies this fairly well.

7. My own view..
I'm all for these forms of assistance as a temporary means of allowing one to avoid homelessness and hunger. My issue is this: at what point does one become responsible for their own choices in life? My case in point is teen pregnancy; how the hell can a 19 year old girl with two children by different unsupportive fathers expect to have a good life with opportunities? I fear that some of these entitlement programs are seen as a way of life rather than temporary assistance.

8. I agree with you
I have no answers. Perhaps I should have my daughter who works in OBGYN send you an email. She sees a lot.
