Chickenhawk student columnist defends himself
This kid writes columns every week calling for an ever more aggressive military campaign in Iraq/Iran/North Korea/Anywhere Else. Well, last week somebody finally called him out on his armchair warrioring. Here is is response.

http://www.dailytexanonline.com/news/2005/02/09/Opinion/War-Rhetoric.No.Match.For.Action-856898.shtml

During last Wednesday's State of the Union address when the cameras turned to the parents of Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood from Pflugerville, killed at Fallujah, the president told of a conversation between this soldier and his mother. She told her son she yearned to protect him now as she had in his youth. He responded by telling her the time had come for him to protect us.

There is a quietly nagging guilt in those of us who believe in our nation's present struggle yet have not gone to fight. I have been an advocate on these pages for President Bush's Iraq policy, I have celebrated its successes and defended its failures. I sometimes forget what an easy task this is to carry out from the comfort of my West Campus residence.

I can rationalize the decision to remain stateside by believing I, and those like me, best serve our country in becoming educated and productive. This may be true, but we are still advocating a policy hardly impacting our lives while rending the very fabric of others.

In my last column celebrating the elections in Iraq I was swept away by rhetorical energy and closed with "This is why we fight." A reader pointed out that I, a student here in Austin who has never risked his life for anything, had no right to include myself in that claim. Liberty, freedom, democracy - these are all little more than rhetorical fluff if none will come to their defense. I admire men such as Bryon because they have the boldness and tenacity to do what I fear - don our nation's uniform, shoulder a weapon and take action in defense of their ideals.

18. Definietly a chickenhawk
If he is so for war and everything going on and he's of age to enlist and serve he should. :eyes: And you're right: they always have some sort of excuse.

5. And some best serve the country as cannon fodder?
Really now, as if they too wouldn't be better serving the country by becoming educated and productive...

Something about swords and ploughshares is creeping into my head right now...

6. At least he admits being afraid.
He wants it done, but only if someone else had to do it. If it were him being called to the front lines, he would be a little more reluctant to beat the war drums.

8. How patriotic. If the Nation ever needed these little bastards to ..
fight, they would run for the hills. These cowards are useless. They are truly beneath contempt in thinking they are too good to fight. I'm sure they emulate fellow cowards like Rush Limbaugh. If this Nation fails, it will be because of cretins like this and their unwillingness to sacrifice for the country.

21. All you have to do is look
at who in the government today served and who didn't. More democrats served then anything. And I know Clinton didn't serve but he didn't go around and praise the Vietnam war like Bush did who didn't serve. :eyes:

10. Hmm...
The freeper fails to show that poor Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood would not also have been better served the country staying state side and getting an education? I mean I bet it sure beats being dead no matter exactly what vague goal he died for. Particularly when the liberty, freedom and democracy of himself and others state side were never in question during the war. I mean freeper posters life would not be effect at all of Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood said you know what I'm gonna pass on that Iraqi thing until the Iraqi people show a little more resolve towards establishing liberty, freedom and democracy. Anyways poor Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood died in a strike design to prevent Saddam from using WMD that we knew he didn't have. The liberty, freedom and democracy shit was an after thought, which is why it's been sooooooo poorly organized.

How is he sure poor Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood isn't like him. Oh wait because he has guts and the freeper doesn't!

11. Standard College Rethug reply
"Its better for me to stay here, and serve the country by supporting the war effort at home".

Really? Then why attack anyone who doesn't support Bush's war for being anti-American? Why say that the war in Iraq is to protect our country and our freedoms.

By their own reasoning, they are too cowardly to protect the nation and defend our freedoms.

13. Talk about a sense of entitlement !
These punks think it's their god-given place to sit on their fat asses while other people go fight wars. These are the same sorry-ass people who cry that people getting food stamps think they have an entitlement.

Have I said lately how much I hate republicans?

"they have the boldness and tenacity to do what I fear - don our nation's uniform, shoulder a weapon and take action in defense of their ideals..."

This young "man" should zip it. If he's too damned cowardly to fight for his ideals, then he should keep his ideals to himself. What a piece of shit.

16. what an elitist little fuck
"I can rationalize the decision to remain stateside by believing I, and those like me, best serve our country in becoming educated and productive."

"I and those like me"....I guess he means white boys of privilege. After all, Latinos and African Americans and lower income white guys aren't going to serve the country by becoming educated and productive. They're just a drain on society who best serve the country as cannon fodder.

Somebody should slap that little turd upside the head.

22. In the last 2 years, I have had several students who were....
"...serving their country in becoming educated and productive." But they had made the mistake of being born poor or middle class. In order to get to the point of "educated & productive" they had joined the National Guard. They joined before the war. However, they were called up & sent to Iraq & Afghanistan. They did not have a choice. They did not have the luxury of sitting on their asses safe at home & cheering for the war.

Where I live, there is a long tradition of joining the Guard to finance an education. Once upon a time in America, the Guard's purpose was either protecting the homeland ( a phrase I have begun to hate) or helping with emergencies in the state. Now they are part of the war machine. Unfortunately, the kids here had not figured that out until recently.

I don't think I can say what I really want to about this little puke. It would probably be too obscene
