Dear George, There Is A Social Security Trust Fund,
in two parts:

one, Old-Age and Survivors Insurance, from 1937:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/describeoasi.html

another, Disability Insurance, from 1957:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/describedi.html

Check with your Secretary of the Treasury...

hope this helps,
pinto

2. Indeed. There're three abbreviations: OASI, DI, and HI.
OASI - Old Age and Survivors Insurance
DI - Disability Insurance
HI - Health Insurance (aka Medicare)

Sometimes two funds are referred to in combination: OASDI. That's Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance.

Oh. By the way. They're Insurance.
