Okay, I'm confused by Paul McCartney performing at the Super Bowl....
I think Paul McCartney is a good person, but I think it's kinda extreme that they went from Janet Jackson in 2004 to Paul McCartney in 2005. What if Paul McCartney has a wardrobe malfunction, eh? Are they going to have some Baptist Choir in 2006?

56. I was hoping for a Paul McCartney-Marilyn Manson duet...
... a rewrite of that nausea-inducing, sugar-sweet McCartney-Stevie Wonder duet, but with new lyrics and a title: "Beelzebub & Ivory."

Now THAT would beat a wardrobe malfunction any day of the week.

This is a completely American game. No one else on the planet cares about it.

And the British have only contempt for it.

44. hey!
What's wrong with the English?

Well... apart from Tony Blair, Michael Howard, Monarchism, and antiquated nod to democracy known as the "first-past-the-post" voting system, a common misconception that we are still an empire and therefore have a say in what the rest of the world does, over-priced beer and ciggies... jesus... actually the list is endless...

At least we gave the world The Goons and Monty Python, so we can't all be sheep-shagging retards...

(Stands up and for no apparent reason gives a rendition of "Rule Britannia" as the Eagles go over for a second touch-down)

Oh yeah... at least we popularised the elixir of life, more commonly known as "tea"

The problem is what's wrong with the Americans, that we import talent for a quintessentially American event.

73. Ah well
I think the old codger did a bang-up job of keeping everyone amused for a while. Understand what you're saying, but all the same, don't underestimate the world-wide audience that the event gets - I know for a fact that ITV1 (the channel that shares the largest audience reach in the UK along with BBC1) carried the event live (cos I wuz a-watchin' it) dedicating over 5 hours airtime. Similarly in Denmark the game was carried live on TV2 - dunno about the rest of Europe, I only know about the UK & Denmark because that's where I spend all my time!

Nevertheless, whilst yes, it is fundamentally an American event, the NFL does have a considerable worldwide audience.

Macca was chosen, no doubt, as a very "safe & fluffy" performer after the quite bewildering outrage at last year's "indiscretion". From a Europe perspective, we did rather scratch our heads at the furore that rocked the US about Janet Jackson - mind you, we are all disgusting liberal-pinko-commie-fag-subversives over here, who believe that the human body is not actually something to be ashamed of - outrageous I know!

Just to throw down a marker here - I'm not so much a "liberal" but a libertarian (well, anarchist actually!), but it bothers me (as it does much of the rest of the world) at the way in which the term liberal has become one of scorn and abuse in the US. So long may this site and it's aims last, I'm looking forward to dipping in and offering my twopenneth every now and then.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

76. Welcome to DU!
I was pretty bewildered by the outrage, myself. Especially when it gave legions of ten-year-old boys their best day ever.

Try to look at in context: the FCC was looking to put pressure on CBS for 60 Minutes and this gave them cover. (My sister pointed out that this month was the first time in her memory that 60 Minutes didn't go on at all for two Sundays. So maybe the pressure worked.)

We taped Macca's performance for our daughter
who had already gone up to bed just before the halftime show.

She'd just seen A Hard Day's Night for the first time, and seemed interested in seeing what Paul looks like these days. She loves their music (more the pre-Revolver stuff than post- ).

11. I find it all very amusing.
The Beatles were quite scandalous in their day and Sir Paul was kicked out of Japan for marijuana possession. They made no bones about drug use, booze and women. Ah . . . how times have changed. Wish my Dad had lived to see the day. I also wish he hadn't tossed my Beatle dolls when I left home at 18 . . . kaching, kaching.

in Japan, in fact. Funny thing about Paul: he got busted for drugs more than the other three Beatles combined, but he had the clean-cut image.

Though he was by far the least interesting of the four, I'm glad he's playing still. And I think it's great he's playing at the Super Bowl.

37. The actual quote was
"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." The fundies flipped of course, and conservatives, particularly in the south, burned Beatles records and had a field day.

78. This comment caused no trouble in England
and was part of a long interview that was pretty interesting. It was in a London newspaper (I think the London Daily Standard) and then was reprinted in Datebook - a teen magazine. I was 16 then.

The reaction in the US was scary, but nowhere near what it would be now if the most popular foreign group made such a comment.
My boss at a Dairy Queen thought I shouldn't go to the Chicago show that I had a ticket for. The idea of not going never occured to me and I told her so. My sister and I were among her best employees so she just said that she was "disappointed" in me.

18. Hey guys, Macca's a cool dude. A Beatle for God's sake!
And... they other day when asked about his performance he said, "There will be no wardrobe malfunction. I'm performing in the nude."

Hey you gotta love the man. AND, big AND, there's been so much nationalism overkill at this Superbowl that it's a good thing to have an Englishman perform.

And don't forget ... Paul was given the "Kennedy Center Honor" two years ago and he declined. I don't think he wanted to be a "George W. Bush honoree."

There's a case to be made that he's the MOST interesting Beatle. Baby, I'm still amazed at Paul McCartney. He's still touring and singing his lungs out.

When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say life and let life
(you know you did, you know you did you know you did)
But in this ever changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die

What does it matter to ya
When you got a job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Probably because it fits the fireworks and sounds great in the big arenas. (My husband and I saw the MSG show last tour.)

But it could be his view of America's current mood - he supposedly said "Let it be Kerry" when performing at some US benefit in California before the election.

I do think there was something to the choices - they were from those done in his last tour (not sure about Drive my car), but other than "hey Jude" they aren't the first McCartney Beatles songs that come to mind.

63. Didn't see it
But I saw him live performing "Pet Sounds". The most amazing nite of music I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

tis in the commercial. now hubby tells me i just walked into the only commercial, but go daddy had a cute little commercial of some girl, huge boobs and top kept falling off or something dont know. this is what we have to have the fundies react to. they keep reacting to hollywood and programming, it is in the commercials. commercials made by repugs to use sex out of greed to sell product

only one i saw, not watching the superbowl

39. So - McCartney is one of the greatest artists of the modern era
I grew up in the 90s and even I know that. Any fan of any kind of music where real artists make their own art would know that.

I don't really understand your comparison. Both McCartney and Janet Jackson are not current artists - so it's not like your comparing an old man to say, Eminem or someone like that. Janet Jackson (except for her stunt last year) has never been considered a edgey or groundbreaking artist; IMO, she's just a garden variety pop-performer.

OTOH, people from across the spectrum would probably agree that McCartney is a living legend who has done his share of "shit disturbing" over his lifetime. But the Superbowl's not really the place to provoke anyway, the way I see it.

IMO, it was an outstanding, hard rocking performance.

41. this halftime didn't suck. Paul sounded great and his
group tight. It was a lot better than some no talent lip-syncing totally manufactured haircut band.

42. I thought it was very good.
Though "Live & Let Die" isn't a favorite of mine, the other three are. Drive My Car is a heck of a rocker; Get Back is great; and Hey Jude is Paul's best song. He did them really well.

Live and Let Die?

86. They kept teasing me with Maybe I'm Amazed, though
I was hoping to see the whole thing.

I don't like Live and Let Die particularly, either. But I have to admit, it worked with the effects.

43. I Agree!
I admit that I'm a big McCartney fan - but he and his band really rocked. And it looked to me that all the band was playing live. I hate that packaged lip-sync pop fluff crap. If you can't sing live with your band and sound half way decent, what's the point?

83. Thank you, YES!
Real talent, a real musician, a real composer actually singing his work! It was great entertainment. I didn't bother with the "political" content of his selections, I just enjoyed the music at halftime for a change.

(I was in the car and didn't see the halftime show). Let's be grateful for small miracles.

79. Well i guess Rock is from America
but I think even without rock, Paul would have been an English musician assimilating the various types of music he was exposed to - just as he pulled from various genres with rock.

81. It was a great show
He sounded just like Paul McCartney! :-)
This show put several of the last half time shows to shame.
Although Live and Let Die will probably be eaten up by the crusaders as their new anthem.
I wish Paul could have pushed a little Peace agenda, but he probably would've been censored.

84. I thought last night's performance was miles and miles
better than last year's. (And I don't care a fig about the wardrobe malfunctions, either). The music and "dancing" and entertainers last year were all seriously cliched and sub-par. Last night was great -- and classy. No stupid cheerleaders performing trite choreography to canned drumbeats... just real music performed by a real musician.

Frankly, I'd prefer a good baptist choir to the crap they gave us last year!

90. It's music vs. a crappy female domination skit...
I thought it was pretty good and I'm not exactly old(under 30).

Last year's craptacular "let's watch a skinny white boy make a black woman his sex toy" was almost saved by the fact that Janet's tittie popped out. Otherwise MTV would have had to deal with what most people were really upset about and that was the sexual subjugation of a woman. I've seen prono that was more respectful of women.
