LOL! Wolcott put's a serious smack down on Michael Medved.
Wolcott is simply the best out there today.....

<snip>
When a skullful of mush pays tribute to another skullful of mush, that's amore. In next week's NY Times Book Review, Harry Stein extends a warm huggy to Michael Medved on the occasion of Medved's simpering new memoir Right Turns: Unconventional Lessons from a Controversial Life. I wasn't aware Medved's life was controversial; perhaps he mistakes a nation's indifference for indignation, since I've never encountered anyone who considered him to be anything more than a minor nuisance, a chronic post-nasal drip.

1. I LOVE Wolcott; our very own gossip columnist.

Hilarious and always spot-on.

In the last graf, Stein writes, "Even many of his readers who hold very different political and social views will concede, grudgingly, the quality of Medved's intellect."

Like fuck we will.

Okay, Wolcott only QUOTED that, but I'm ROFLMAO.

"Attack Poodles" was the absolutely funniest NF book I've read in years.

Edit--damn HTML.

4. Medved is quoted here on his defense of the Passion
"Medved devotes considerable space in his book to the religious right, and especially to his spirited public defense of Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ... When asked by fellow Jews, 'How can you work with people who sincerely believe you're going straight to hell?' his reply is simple: 'It's not a problem for me because I'm confident that they're wrong.'"

I have asked the same thing of orthodox Jewish friends and given the same answer. They also say that Jews are under such attack now, that any friend is better than no friend. Oy vey!

7. I loved "Attack Poodles," too!
There's an especially good chapter on Peggy Noonan.

3. I read a couple of Medved pieces about 10 years ago
And lost interest.

Same old generic selfish slop you get from the rest of the right.

Could not be bothered to sample further.

8. Another "Attack Poodles" fan here.
If you haven't read James Wolcott's "Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants," be sure to keep it in mind when you go to the library or bookstore, or when you shop for a present for your favorite news junkie. There is a quotable zinger on EVERY page (i.e., Keith Olbermann is "Clark Kent with attitude"). Wolcott is, behind the wit, very principled and very, very angry. His words are a call to action, not to kibitzing.

Full disclosure: I met Michael Medved years ago after a discussion about censorship in the movies. He was the only panel participant who took time to talk to people afterwards. I found him rather affected but quite gracious and willing to discuss the issues.

I read his "Hollywood Versus America," and while I don't share his views on most matters, I am rather sick of the gratuitous filth and nastiness in American films. That, however, is more about the bottom line and our mind-set than it is about some political perspective. It's perfectly possible to make an interesting film without sinking to the lowest common denominator.

Anyway, I will be certain to read the Wolcott piece. Thanks for the link!

12. Did his kid turn 18 yet?
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 09:37 PM by uhhuh
If he has, has he forced him to join the military, as he swore he would do in support of the war?

On edit: Well, his son is too young for a few more years I just found out. His daughter is old enough to join though.
