DR. Rice: "U.S. Won't Let Iraq Divide"

ANKARA, Turkey - The United States wants Iraq to remain whole now that the first round of elections is over, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in an attempt to reassure nervous Turkish leaders that Washington won't allow Iraqi Kurds to form a breakaway state.

Anti-U.S. sentiments have been strong in Turkey since the start of the war in neighboring Iraq.

DR. Rice tells Iraq to "talk to the hand" if they think they are free and independent now.

1. So far they can't even secure Baghdad
much less prevent Iraq from dividing.

And the Kurds have already announced an independent state.

Rice has nothing to say about the matter. Iraqis, Kurds and Turks will decide.

Probably in a nasty way.

4. You're right, bluebear. . .
what gives any other nation on earth the right to tell the Iraqis if they are to remain one country or split into 25 million nations -- they are, after all, a "democracy."

12. I wish you had been around
to persuade Lincoln of that. It would be a much better world if the nutbags were in their own country in the South.

Instead, they took over the entire United States. And now the most backward, regressive elements of the U.S. have their itchy trigger fingers ready to punch in the launch codes on 10,000 nuclear warheads.

And before anyone accuses me of bashing the South, I am in the South. I just observe reality around me. What I am saying is true. And there is no way to reconcile these bloodthirsty "Christian" mobs with a viable future for planet Earth. In fact, they don't want a viable future. They want to bring on the Rapture, which is a heretical theology invented in the 19th century.

I never thought the Mormons (who have a huge church in my neighborhood) would appear to be moderate, but up against the fundy premillennialists, the Mormons are the very embodiment of reason and enlightenment.

14. What if Sistani want the Kurds to have their own country?
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 08:30 AM by hector459
What kind of "democracy" is this that the US can dictate what a new sovereign nation can do? And what will it COST the US to keep the Kurd "politicians" from demanding their own state? I don't think we can afford whatever it is.

OH, I forgot, we still occupy Iraq. Can't wait for the showdown between Sistani and Rice. Or do you think Sistani will capitualte? By the way, Condi is looking more and more like the devil.

17.  I thought they had 'elections"
and that we brought "freedom" and "liberty" to the people of Iraq.

What is this known liar, Condi, doing telling them what the US wants (or else?) She screwed up the reconstruction of Iraq to begin with and now does she expect them to do what she says?

She is stirring up a hornet's nest with her authoritarian remarks. If I were an Iraqi that voted, I would wonder about my vote.

I am puzzled also about the interim constition set up by Bremer. Does anyone remember anything about granting Halliburton and other corporations a free hand in Iraq, without any prosecution for breaking any law and that it was to be binding for five years?

I remember hearing Ray Talliafero talking about this, or did I dream that?
