Jonah Goldberg can't join the military & go to Iraq because he has a kid
"Let them Eat Cake"
http://rising-hegemon.blogspot.com/2005/02/let-them-eat-cake.html

Jonah Goldberg, Lord High Colonic of the intersection of Manure Street & Insouciance Avenue (hey, Sully's allegedly retiring somebody has to use that word). He has given us the point blank statement of his excuse for being a young man gung ho for wars other young folks have to fight.

Why won't he hitch up his pants and become an Army of One?

from "On And On"
http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/05_01_30_corner-archive.asp#055419

...As for why my sorry a** isn't in the kill zone, lots of people think this is a searingly pertinent question. No answer I could give -- I'm 35 years old, my family couldn't afford the lost income, I have a baby daughter, my a** is, er, sorry, are a few--ever seem to suffice. But this chicken-hawk nonsense is something that's been batted around too many times to get into again here. What I do think is interesting is that out of the thousands upon thousands of emails I've gotten from people in the military over the years, maybe a dozen have ever asked this question. Invariably, it's anti-war leftists who believe that their personally defined notions of hypocrisy trump any argument and any position. Meanwhile, the military guys have been overwhelmingly friendly and very often grateful for the support we offer around here.

Well Jonah, you know there are about 150,000 Americans over in the "kill zone" now and I'd wager more than a third of 'em are married and have a kid. There are literally thousands who are your age and older, who belonged to the national guard, were working their civilian jobs, making their living for their wives (or husbands) and kids and they have been pulled into the war you so nobly cheered on...and for not a few of them...just when they think they were getting out, they've been sent back or kept over there. Meanwhile their boys and girls do not remember what they looked like, their employers have ironically soldiered on without them, and their spouses do the work of two parents.

And of course there are the 1,447 bodies carried home. Many parents of children they will not see grow, wives and husbands they will no longer be able to touch. All they ever had or could be taken away from them. Many starting from a far worse lot in life than you, and now certainly ending up that way.

Yes, you have to make your little living. Running a magazine employing unedited hacks, cheering on wars -- as long as a Republican is starting them. It must be just the fucking bees knees being you -- being so fucking righteous and unable to recognize your own piddling insignificance and foolishness.

3. Goldberg is a cowardly, pathetic twit.
Many in the miltary are anti-war. Especially the fighters.

I'm an anti-war leftist who served in the infantry for twelve years.

NO EXCUSE Jonah, you disgusting pig.

He claims the support of thousands of military people who have emailed him. Maybe so, but how many liberals listen to or read his garbage, let alone bother emailing him?

Overall, a disgusting attempt to claim military support by another yellow-bellied chickenhawk.

6. How about these reasons?
1. Cowardice

2. Only Israeli jews fight - that's why I don't live there.

3. My old whore Mommy won't let me go

4. David Brooks, George Will, Sean Hannity, Brit Hume, Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Pat Buchanan never served - why should I?

5. We the privileged don't do those things - that's why God made servants.

12. Pat's conservative magazine ridiculed the neocon quest for a Pax Americana
as much as any prominent Democrat during the march to war. He's a right wing nut be he isn't a PNACer.

7. The Army has no use for a corpulent twit such as Jonah. He'd be a liability
in a fire zone. Let the momma's boy stay home and continue to e-mail soldiers in an attempt justify his existence.

9. I think the guys serving in Iraq
would like a bit more that lip service from the RWers who supported and encouraged that war. Like maybe some relief in the way of new recruits to lessen their third tours of duty? Just a thought. Don't see lines around the block coming out of the recruitment centers filled with young, healthy childless Republicans.

Encourage them to enlist Jonah. It's the least you could do.

10. Wow, Jonah. You almost nailed it when you wrote about...
"...anti-war leftists who believe that their personally defined notions of hypocrisy trump any argument and any position...." However, as an anti-war leftist, it's my duty to point out two small errors in your reasoning:

1. Our "notions" of hypocrisy are well accepted by the entire reality-based community.

and

2. Identifying hypocrisy doesn't trump all arguments and positions but it does trump hypocritical ones such as a) stating that no reason you could give for avoiding military service would ever suffice, b) avoiding the fact that you are a chicken hawk by dismissing the chicken hawk discussion, altogether, and c) suggesting that, by being an unsubstantiated mere dozen drops in an unsubstantiated sea of jingoistic love notes, the question regarding your failure to serve your country is rendered unworthy of an answer.

On the other hand, if "...I'm 35 years old, my family couldn't afford the lost income, I have a baby daughter, my a** is, er, sorry...." really are your reasons for avoiding service, I am quite happy to accept the last one because it is 100% accurate. Your ass truly is sorry.

13. Now let's be honest. If you support Republican ideas,
then you assume that the wealthy and the powerful make things happen, and they're on top because they're better in some way. The poor are just cogs in a machine far too complex for them to ever understand.

If Mr. Goldberg wanted to be honest with himself and his readers, he would say, "I'm not joining the military because I don't have to. I have a very comfortable life and a nice spot in the social structure. Dying for your country is a privilege reserved for those with no other choice. Now cut my taxes some more".

The word chickenhawk is entirely appropriate. Live with it, Jonah.

14. Well Maybe Jonah Should Save Up
and then by the time he and his fellow hypocrites get us into war with Iran, he can leave home and join the fight secure in the knowledge that his family's livelihood is secure.

BTW, isn't a Jonah what they call someone who is a bringer of bad luck and tragedy?

and I was a mother of two. Ok so he can get a pass but the military can have his daughter. I think that is a nice way for the military to work anyway, by skipping a generation.

23. My Dad used to subscribe to that rag.
The National Review is such a piece of shit. Almost as bad as the Weekly Standard.

And yeah, yeah, yeah, that's every excuse I've ever heard from some non-serving chickenhawk. But as another poster put it, he'd be much more honest if he'd just come right out and say, "I'm rich, so I don't have to serve. That's what the poor people are for."
