How many Americans were killed in the Tsunami?
I can't seem to find any lists of missing or dead Americans on line. What's up with that? Does anyone know?

1. I heard it was more than on 9/11, which is why you don't hear the numbers.
That's of course a rumor, though.

3. For 9-11 we spend close to a trillion dollars and invade two countries
For the tsunami, the American citizens donate directly than the government spent on the problem.

And Bush's original aid offer was a LOAN for less than the cost of his coronation bash.

2. Last I heard, over 3,000. More than we lost on 9-11
<snip>
The first is that it happened to occur in the heart of South Asia's tourist meccas, which in turn has brought immense news coverage. A quake in Iran's interior that takes 100,000 barely gets notice becuase it's in such remote areas, but this event truly affected people of the entire world... it's estimated that alone over 3,000 Americans and 5,000 Swedes are missing and presumed dead from this horrible event! Other disasters might have occurred with equal destruction and death, but this one occurred within our scope of observation.

4. I've heard the same numbers.
Isn't it strange that this doesn't get any news coverage? Why? Is it because a) it was a tourist resort, or b) because Indonesia is on our "potental enemy" list.

I've read terrible stories about how the US embassy treated its citizens so badly. People were just showing up at the embassy in their swim shorts, sandals, and nothing else. Their passports were gone.

Those scummy weasels made them buy new expedited passports, which costs a lot more. They were totally unhelpful.

I read in Swedish newspapers that the American embassy personnel were sitting in the VIP lounge when all this was going on.

5. I haven't been here in a long time
Re the tsunami, has anyone yet suggested "GW" stands for "Global Warming"?

6. I knew at least one of the victims
Angie Foust was one of the instructors at the health club I belonged to in Portland. She was my first water aerobics instructor, and even though she handed the class over to someone else after a few months, she was always friendly when I ran into her over the next five years.

She was vacationing with her boyfriend. Their families sent a private detective to Thailand to look for them, but their trail ended at a hotel in Phuket that was badly damaged, and no trace of them has been found.

I found a picture of them on the Internet, placed on a Thai site by their families, but the link shows up as "illegal code."
