6. Rummy addressed this issue on "eat the press" a few months ago
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 04:29 PM by sjr5740
I don't exactly remeber his response to Timmy Russert Potatoes but I think the gist was something like "The US wanted to warm relations with Iraq and I was stuck with this assignment. I really didn't want to do it."

Maybe someone can find that transcript

on edit

Russert: You are one of the few Americans to have ever met Saddam Hussein -- this is back in December of 1983. You were a special envoy from President Reagan to talk with him about resuming diplomatic relations in some form. You said at that time, "Saddam made it clear Iraq was not interested in making mischief." Now looking at that 20 years later, what conclusion have you come to?

Rumsfeld: Well, let me put that statement in context. We had just had 241 Marines killed in a terrorist attack in Beirut, Lebanon. President Reagan and Secretary George Shultz asked me to serve for a period of months as a special presidential envoy. The problem was that there were terrorists in Lebanon and in Syria that were causing difficulties there, and it would have been helpful if Iraq, which was engaged in a war with Iran, would take the steps necessary to not make mischief, or additional mischief of the kind that Syria and Lebanon were engaged in -- Lebanon against its will. I mean, the Syrians had forces in Lebanon. The Lebanese government was very supportive of us and very helpful. But that is the mischief that was referred to.

22. It Seems To Me That Somebody Should Be Able To......
go back to Dec 83 to Mar 84 and check newspaper accounts of Rummy's visits to Iraq. It not like him to be silent about these kinds of things and there should be something reported in the press that could further hang this guy. What was reported then about his visits? What did he report back to the then administration? How was it publized? We need some research here and actual copies fo the newspaper accounts - because many Americans only believe what they read in the newspapers.

I like the fact that Boxer made this picture public. Before the election when I was lobbying my Repug friends and told them about this picture and the policies of the time - they did not want to believe. Now Boxer outed Rummy for all to see. I hope the MSM picks up on this - but I have my doubts. At least it is in the record books now.

8. I really hate that "playing politics" thing
They're politicians. That's what they're supposed to do. That what they're getting paid to do. If they weren't, that would be a problem. It's a stupid and irrelevant argument that shouldn't hold any water, but the Nazi whores on talk radio keep using it like it means something. Bastards!

16. The truth is
that they chose her to do their dirty work BECAUSE she is black and they could scream "racism" when their murderous policies are called into question, just exactly like they are doing. When in actuality, their motives are racist.

It's too bad she'll do it. Either sucker or sell-out.

9. Boxer is doing a simple "analysis of Rice's words"... and Rice comes off
as nothing more than "selling the war at all costs"... damn the truth.

This is why we need alternative media.... this was ALL known.

Boxer is doing the job of our media !!!!!!!

7. Barbara, watch your back!
The main stream media can't ignore this now. They have to report it. Let's hope some more Democrats with back bone continue to speak up, then CNN, MSNBS, FOX, ABC, NBC and CBS won't be able to ignore this history in the making.

21. Are you sure it's before?
When was he there?

I think the really sick and twisted torture started when they transferred that Gitmo general over there and replaced the woman general. When was this taken in relation to that?

26. The eyes of the woman on the left (Karpinski?) have seen a LOT of
dark, nasty things that are haunting her to no end. On the other hand, rummy looks as "downhome" as ever in the US run torture center at the Halliburtion Hotel.

19. In what context did she show the photo
On the Senate floor? In a Senate hearing with Rumsfeld? What did she say about it. Sorry, I missed it.

And yes she should rub it in the face of the media that THEY are the ones who should have brought this out, like some others posted.

24. Now if only more people had read "Spider's Web: The Secret History of How
the US Illegally Armed Iraq" by Alan Friedman they would be amazed that the Reagan administration let Saddam off on the USS Stark attack (see http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/id344.htm ) with his apology as sufficient.

We need to get out of the world's policeman role and onto alternative sources of energy.
