A question for the smokers here about cig lighters and airline travel
I haven't flown since the latest rules about cigarette lighters. I use an old fashioned (1940s or 1950s) Ronson liquid fuel lighter. It looks like this (slightly different case but same mechanism).

It uses this lighter fluid and the flints, but NOT the butane fuel:

Are these allowed on airlines? Is there anywhere I can go to check? The last time I flew was late September and had this with me. They almost took it away, but the supervisor relented and allowed me to keep it. No one then was clear as to whether this was a banned lighter (as are butane) or not.

1. i'd pack it, or buy a bic just to make sure. It would be a shame to
have it confiscated

2. Check the TSA's web site.
http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183&content=09000519800720a4

This refers you to a .pdf document which lists all permitted and prohibited items. It says unabsorbed liquid fuel lighters are prohibited, but you can carry on 2 disposable or absorbed fuel lighters.

5. Ocelot, thanks! That answered my question.
The PDF also had a link in it to an airline regulation about the same thing.

3. Last time I flew
Which was 2 years ago now, I carried my Zippo in my pocket the whole way. I'd go to the web site of the airline you're flying on and check their guidelines.

7. I just called TSA's offices in DC
Here's the deal ..........

The lighter shown above is prohibited.

All refillable lighters are prohibited.

You may carry two (2) disposable lighters

You may carry up to four (4) books of safety matches. No "strike anywhere" wooden matches are allowed.

After (some date) in February, all lighters will be prohibited. Safety matches will probably still be allowed.

11. Once again HS shows just how stupid they are.
They allow disposable, butane lighters, which, if you have the knowhow, are easy to make into small shrapnel bombs, yet disallow refillable, naptha fueled lighters, which you cannot do anything with. Ya gotta wonder about these geniuses at HS.:eyes:

13. That's exactly what I was thinking when the operator said that
I specifically said "You mean a lighter with a quantity of liquid fuel is okay, but one with the fuel absorbed in cotton wadding is not?"

When my youngest son was about 11 or 12, he got his young azz beat good for making a bomb out of a Bic. He and his friend set two of them off in the back yard! We thought the house had blown up. They thought it was funny.

8. Why don't you stop smoking?
I mean it's filthy habit that is going to shorten your lifespan. And some of the money you put in cigerrette companies hands goes predominately to Republican Politicians.

9. The company that makes American Spirits is very socially aware
for a tobacco company, at least. I don't know for a fact that they're blue, but i'll bet they're not red.
