Are we going to attack Iran?
Oh geez, this would be the 3rd country Republicans armed and then went after this decade alone.

Yes, the Republicans armed Afghan terrorists, Saddam Hussein, and now we are going after Iran (Iran-Contra).

What is going on?

5. If Bush bit off more than he could chew with Iraq,
and it was already a beaten country...he is really going to get a mouthful with Iran. We're all going to be choking on Iran.

8. Yes, especially when they sink a few carrier groups...
with their missiles which are very capable of doing so.

6. They will at least launch an air attack on the "nukular sites"
Don't forget, we have one hell of an air force and navy that hasn't been used lately.

22. Correct
The plan is not to invade and occupy. Rather, it will be similar to when Israel did air strikes on a nuclear site in Iraq. The USA has tried to negotiate and to intimidate, but Iran seems confident that they can and will continue on the path they are on.

Keep in mind that the intelligence reports that were being passed to the Israeli front in the "neocon spy scandal" were in regard to the possibility of air strikes in Iran. There is a significant group within the administration that have aggressively advocated this position for a couple years.

In fact, there have only been two voices of reason on this issue in the administration: Secretary of State Colin Powell, and his best friend, the deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage. Now it's a sad state of affairs when Colin Powell is considered a man of restraint in military matters. And if it was sad then, it's tragic now that he is gone. I'm no fan of Powell. I don't think he had the spine to stand up for his beliefs. Armitage was the closest thing to an open mind that existed in the first administration. Tragic.

Now we have an administration which has shed the few semi-reasonable individuals like a dried snake skin. And that snake has had numerous special operations teams doing "research" on targets in Iran. Hersh reported on this; but, of course, the administration wanted this leaked, to intimidate Iran.

The only question now is when is the best weather for a volley of air strikes in a well-defended Iran. I believe that late April may be the time we see Israeli-American bombers fly into Iran.

9. WE aren't gonna attack Iran ...
We're gonna let Israel bomb their nuclear facilities. Then Iran attacks our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan or perhaps our ships in the Gulf and then the Evil Chimp-in-Chief HAS to reinstate the draft to counter this assault from a terra-supporting totalitarian state.

See, it won't be his fault at all.

21. I've heard this, as well, that Israel will attack Iran and we'll be
back up. What another great signal to send to the Muslim world who already hates and mistrusts us. Plus, this would truly be a suicidal mission.

11. It all goes back to the Cold War, as you mentioned.
Incidentally, I could be wrong, but I have to admit that I really don't have that much of a problem with how the United States helped arm the Afghan muhajadeen, in the context of that time. The Soviet Union invaded their country, and regardless of their fundamentalist leanings, they had a fundamental right to defend themselves from imperialist aggression. In the process, the USSR also spent itself to oblivion on their military-industrial complex, while neglecting its domestic obligations. In fact, it all sounds rather familiar.

I'm not convinced that America could have foreseen the price of that investment, which we finally were forced to pay in 2001. Unfortunately, the Bush administration reacted by perpetuating the very pattern of Western imperialism that has haunted the world for centuries, and which brought us to this point.

One of the hawks' most often-used justifications for invading Iraq is that Hussein... invaded Iran.

I swear, Orwell was right. The doublethink required to believe all these things simultaneously is just astounding.

and has nuclear weapons. And where would we get the huge number of troops that would be needed? But your point is well taken. Saddam would have surely have been decimated in the Iran-Iraq war, back in the '80s, if he had not been given considerable help by the Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations. But the deaths were still staggering, especially among the Iranians, who kept coming, in wave after wave, and there are mass graves.:-(

And you're also right about the others. Remember, Osama bin Laden was recruited by the CIA to help defeat the Soviets when they invaded Afghanistan. It just gets crazier by the moment, but the media has a short memory. We, the Iranians, Iraqis and Osama bin Laden do not. Did you also know that the Americans and British were instrumental in overthrowing democracy in Iran, back in the '50s, and installing the brutal regime of the Shah. They haven't forgotten, though we may have. I made a post about this, in this forum, some time ago.
:scared:

On edit: I found my archived thread on this, with the article I posted. It's on Iran, titled "We Had a Democracy Once, But You Crushed It."
