Noonan: "mission inebriation" speech
Amazingly, not a totally positive perspective on Bush inauguration speech from one of those writers who is usually "lovingly" kind about his speeches. Check it out completely at

http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/

A few snips -

"The inaugural address itself was startling. It left me with a bad feeling, and reluctant dislike. Rhetorically, it veered from high-class boilerplate to strong and simple sentences, but it was not pedestrian. George W. Bush's second inaugural will no doubt prove historic because it carried a punch, asserting an agenda so sweeping that an observer quipped that by the end he would not have been surprised if the president had announced we were going to colonize Mars." . . .

and

"This is--how else to put it?--over the top. It is the kind of sentence that makes you wonder if this White House did not, in the preparation period, have a case of what I have called in the past "mission inebriation." A sense that there are few legitimate boundaries to the desires born in the goodness of their good hearts.

One wonders if they shouldn't ease up, calm down, breathe deep, get more securely grounded. The most moving speeches summon us to the cause of what is actually possible. Perfection in the life of man on earth is not. "

3. Funny
You voted for them. You told everyone to vote for them. You tilted your head, quivered your lip, took a deep breath looking for the right words to describe your love for the man, and told everybody that Bush was a magical president.

Screw you Peggy Noonan. You don't get to go back now.

9. Check out this freeper post:
"I don't know what Peggy's problem is. From where I sit, everybody around me knows where we are headed, and Bush's speech plainly laid it out. The United States is acting as a conduit for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which also translates into an umbrella of grace for Israel. We are in a global holy war against the state-worship religion of Communism and the UN, and against the totalitarian grip of the Islamofascists.

What's so hard to swallow about that? Is there something wrong with just plainly saying it?

Freedom is from God. It's all through the Bible. While I disagree with the Prez on a few issues, he's right in the groove with his vision."

I don't think he's read the New Testament. Jesus was a rebel in his time. They just don't want to admit it. These folks are scary.

6. Her ridiculous definition of the phrase "reality-based community"
"The administration's approach to history is at odds with what has been described by a communications adviser to the president as the "reality-based community." A dumb phrase, but not a dumb thought: He meant that the administration sees history as dynamic and changeable, not as static and impervious to redirection or improvement. That is the Bush administration way, and it happens to be realistic: History is dynamic and changeable. On the other hand, some things are constant, such as human imperfection, injustice, misery and bad government.

See, I always thought "reality-based" meant paying attention to objective facts and experienced non-partisan experts.
Reviewing your results on an on-going basis to check your assumptions and tactics.
Changing your plan when the situation changes, or if you are failing.
Not using lies to justify your desired conclusions and/or rash behavior.
Seeing things as they are, not as you hope them to be.
Sorta the opposite of a faith-based approach.

16. Shrub's inauguration words for the 'soon to be draft aged'

"I ask our youngest citizens to believe the evidence of your eyes. You have seen duty and allegiance in the determined faces of our soldiers. You have seen that life is fragile, and evil is real, and courage triumphs. Make the choice to serve in a cause larger than your wants, larger than yourself - and in your days you will add not just to the wealth of our country, but to its character."

Purdy words like that are sure to light the 'untamed fire of freedom' in the hearts of the true believers... NOT.

12. My God... don't tell me this True Believer said that...
that woman has always sounded like she is on drugs, though she probably isn't (which makes it even more scary.)

Funny thing, even when I misguidedly (okay, VERY misguidedly) supported * in 1999/2000--even then, I despised that woman, mostly b/c of her cloying manner and her hypnotic voice. She is one of the least persuasive pundits I've ever seen.

you just can't polish this turd up any more.

Bush II will never be Reagan, not even close, Peggy. Fuck you for helping him to get re-elected.
