...I don't know the exact details but the scientist who discovered microwaves did so by working in his lab with some equipment, and noticed the chocolate bar melted in his pocket. He was basically standing inside a microwave unknowingly, and made one of the most useful kitchen appliances ever by studying what happened.

3. cooked birds on the ground outside large radar installations
also gave them the clue that if they figured out how to shield it, they could turn it into some sort of cooking device.
