Snopes, how dare they point out
what a waste of effort Not One Damn Dime Day is!
http://snopes.com/politics/war/not1dime.asp

Whether the desired goal is laudable or not, a protest that has little chance of succeeding at its purpose but a high likelihood of harming innocent parties does no one any good. As we always say about these kinds of things, results are generally proportional to effort: If the most effort one is willing to put into a cause is to do nothing, then one should expect to accomplish nothing in return.

6. Please. They aren't pointing out the "truth"
They are offering their opinion on a protest.

That would be fine, if that were their role.

All they are for is debunking and fact checking emails.

Their role is to tell you that Kerry does not actually have a secret contract with Satan in his Senate office, despite what the email you got from your 700 Club watching sister in law.

Their role is to tell you that, despite claims in an email spreading around the country like a wildfire, Rolaids have never been shown to cause cancer.

There really is no reason to even discuss the "Not one damn dime day" email, seeing as there is no question of its authenticity. If they feel it is necessary to show people that the protest will make no difference, why not actually some any kind of reasoning or evidence, rather than a bunch of right wing talking points (boycotts hurt employees, too, and they are innocent).

Its pathetic, there is no reason for them to do this.

Why not have a debunking page on their site that says "This email claims that our President is a man of God. But is he? Probably not."

7. their role is as a privately created website
to point out whatever they choose. They are simply pointing out, much to the chagrin of some people here, that despite claims that this protest will cripple the economy of the US temporarily, it will really have zero impact.

Sorry, ComerPerro, this idea was a loser from the start. If it had been, "Not one damn THING day" (referring to consuming nothing instead of just spending nothing), it might have been more interesting. Instead, people may delay purchasing something, but if you drink that Coke in the fridge or if you eat a sandwich, or if you drive your car...well, you gotta replace that stuff sometime...and the net effect is nada.

Sorry we disagree on this one...but Snopes is dead on...

2. Oh, so spending money is a moral obligation now?
I thought frugality was good. I guess my Mom was wrong. She always said I shouldn't go sround buying unnecessary things. Maybe she was a commie agent bent on the destruction of the Judeo-Christian civilization.

Snopes does a good job pointing out facts, but that's no fact. It's opinion.

3. It's not about overall frugality. There are some things you have to buy.
For example, I have to buy some school supplies for tomorrow. Trust me, not a whole hell of a lot of choice in the matter. Now, I suppose I could wait until the morning and drive out extra early, but realistically what the hell is the point? What appreciable difference will it make to the political powers whether I get them now or later?

4. You took a giant leap
to change this to a discussion about 'frugality' and your 'commie mommie'.

5. I can't get to the site, but Snopes is technically correct.
It's a symbolic gesture, but won't actually harm any companies, the economy, or Bush supporters. Companies measure their profits in quarters, not by days or weeks. The simple fact is that most people spend their money on things they need, and only a small percentage of most of our incomes goes to useless trinkets. Whether we're talking food, clothes, or a new car, you can pretty much gurantee that most of the people who are boycotting sales today either bought yesterday or are planning on buying tomorrow. Net sales for the quarter will be unaffected.

Sorry, but that's American economic reality and one of the reasons that boycotts have never been more than marginally effective in this country. Unless you can sustain the boycott for a longer period of time they just don't do any good.
