My Take on Senate Dems and Rice Vote
Here are the reasons the Senate Dems didn't stand up:

1) SecState is a holding place for the Bush Admin. The only Cabinet positions that matter to them are SecDef, SecDHS, and the new National Intel Director.

2) The Dems know that an administration that is more intent on killing people first, tben asking questions, is not interested in using the SecState as anything more than a mouthpiece.

3) The Dems are offering little resitance so they can save the fight for something that has more consequence and has more of a chance at offending some Republicans.

1. The reason they didn't stand up is that it's really hard to stand up
WHEN YOU HAVEN'T GOT A FREAKING SPINE.

2. it's easier than that

The only people whose opinions matter are Cheney and Rumsfeld, with a little input from Falwell/Dobson via Bush Jr. on keeping domestic power. Everyone else is in practice only a trained monkey, used to pull levers and catch arrows.

I shall resist an urge to extend the metaphor to anything involving spanking monkeys, but going after Goss, Gonzalez, Rice, Bolton, and so on is something of the kind. They don't matter, only the ways they shield or expose Cheney/Rummie/Dubya matter.

3. Fight? Fight?!
What makes you think they are going to fight for anything. All the evidence points to them beating into submission anyone that might raise a fuss. I see no evidence that they are massing forces for some grand assault of some principle. I mean if they can't find their principles to fight off the tradgedy in Iraq what exactly is their sticking point? All I see is a group of people that have no direction and are hoping the train doesn't run them over.

5. Saving up their fight?
A bit late for that. Four years too late. Sort of like the couch potato saving energy for the marathon he/she hopes to win some day, maybe. Maybe they should try to get in a few practice sessions and give up some of the butt-licking exercises.
