Name one great American who is white.
Martin Luther King was probably the greatest America leader. Then there were some native Americans who were also great. I have a soft spot for John Quincy Adams who after he was president and could have rested, fought so hard to abolish slavery. But what's so great about the founding fathers and all the rest of them? I'm Canadian so I'm just wondering. (I'm white but there's some Navaho ancestor way back.) The greatest Canadian, by the way, was Chief Tecumseh who helped us whup 50,000 Americans. It was 5,000 against 50,000 but thanks to Chief Tecumseh we tricked you and scared you so much that you ran for cover while we burnt down the White House. It wasn't our idea. You attacked us. Superior numbers or superior power doesn't win every time. Sound familiar? I'm living for the day when white Americans are outnumbered by blacks and hispanics. Perhaps then you'll have a true democracy. Not to mention universal health care.

Not to mention racist.

Incidentally, the answer is Bob Dylan. Or Dennis Kucinich. Or Andy Warhol. Or Jello Biafra. Or Gram Parsons. Or Andrew Carnegie. Or Abraham Lincoln. Or DJ Shadow. Or Iggy Pop. Or Eleanor Roosevelt. Or FDR. Or Robert F. Kennedy. Or Hank Williams. Or Woody Guthrie. Or - I'm sure others can add many more to my list.

Incidentally - we didn't burn the White House - English and Scots Marines did.

57. But Dylan himself would not take exception to yinkaafrica'a assessment...
Dylan does not reserve his contempt just for those who have always tried to inflate him into something that he is not.
Dylan loathes himself just as much as he loathes the most rabid Dylan fanatic. Sometimes deservedly so.
He has also made great art on a number of occasions.

1. Jefferson-founder of modern american liberalism

2. Jonas Salk--how many people do you know with the always-debilitating polio??

3. Thomas Edsion--I like telephones b/c i can talk to people far away

4. Robert E. Lee--hate him however much you want, he was a military genius, and he fought for his home, and if you read his existing writings, he is a liberal!

5. Jim Morrison--voice of the greatest American band, IMO

102. If the South would have won the Civil War,
Lee would have been its second president for sure.

Gets the what-if mind moving to wonder what he would have done about slavery. One thing he was for sure was bold and he commanded absolute respect from top to bottom.

106. Let's get real here. Crazy Horse was an "insurgent"...
...in the best sense of that word, not Lee, vis-a-vi the known facts of American History. Marsh Robert was a West Point graduate who only resigned his commission from the Army because he thought he heard the call of duty to "Old Virginia" whispering in his ear...had the Civil War not come, it would've been United States Army General Lee whom would've dispatched Sherman, Sheridan, and Custer to deal with all those unruly "redskins" in the West...

112. Lee did his job...
He was a soldier. His first duty was to his home. He opposed slavery and he NEVER committed any documented war crimes (under modern definitions) unlike Sherman or Custer. If somebody was planning massive war against good ole Memphis, I would fight for my home, which is exactly what he did. When the gov confiscated his property to build Arlington National Cemetary, he considered it his greatest honor. I have nothing but admiration for the man.

I don't think anything has to do with the color of somebody's skin or national origin. There are millions of "Great Americans" of all races.

Attributing good/bad characteristics onto people because of their race is bigoted and evil....something that is done at KKK meetings. Even conservatives don't do this anymore...or, at least not in public (Trent Lott excepted).

40. Well, you "claim" a few things...
...that are certifiable horseshit. Let's start with the fact that the War of 1812 was not about Canada per se, but rather about the outrages then being committed by the Royal Navy on the high seas against neutral American merchantmen, among other high-handed Imperial outrages. So let's get that straight at the outset.

45. Love this one....
"It was 5,000 against 50,000 but thanks to Chief Tecumseh we tricked you and scared you so much that you ran for cover while we burnt down the White House."

Of course I'm sure you'll enjoy reading about the fact that what you did was to set Andrew Jackson off on a crusade throughout the rest of his life to settle that score, starting with the Battle of New Orleans.

Of course that slaughter of of over 2000 trained British regulars was accomplished by using a blend of regular American Soldiers, African Americans, and common cut throat pirates, many who were of mixed race.
Or in other words, just common Americans.

The revenge however Jackson took against the remainder of the entire native American population during the rest of his life was extreme. But I guess you have Chief Tecumseh to thank for that.

For the rest of you fruit cakes that want Jackson removed from the twenty dollar bill, I guess you can thank Canada for the reason he's there.

This country doesn't have the most progressive government in the world, but go back as far as you want -- American activists have fought and led the way in personal freedoms, women's suffrage, race relations, gay rights, environmentalism, and many other issues. Heros galore.

gotta give me credit i'm even handed in my critique of filthy conquering racist nations. france still owes haiti 22 billion. maybe that's why they participated in aristides ouster as he was demanding reparations. it's good to have the house arab for the proper colonial facade. the wage slaves back home will keep wondering why those inept brown folk can't get it right. they won't look into their own servitude to the beast.

73. i'm not asking this to be....
confrontational but what makes this a racist question? how do you define racism? america is in such deep denial about racism and its power relationships. it seems people want it swept under the rug. it's not a thing of the past. it has been so thoroughly institutionalized and internalized too many think it has disappeared as a primary force dictating many lives and many policies. everybody needs to get out of their politics of comfort and this is certainly one issue which many on the left and right want to dismiss.
my answer: phil ochs, emma goldman, lenny bruce and bill lee. all of these folks were marginalized or worse by the State that doesn't want this issue to be seen as a bedrock platform of its vulgar existence. ramblin'.....

i have no comfort zone. all should be open for discussion. the political dialogue in america is virtually castrated and quite narrow. we all need to challenge our assumptions and examine the politics of our every day lives not simply live in the realm of rhetorical party politics.

Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 12:57 AM by LiviaOlivia
You don't openly (via a "profile") state your country, state, province, etc.

i.e.: You don't have a little human head along side your Du name. You hide.

Still don't get it? Go to the ATA forum and have them explain it. And make a donation while you're at it. Put your money where your mouth is.

the overseers. anyone could say anything in their profile. how silly. i have nothing to hide.this is just a discussion forum. now is that pressure to contribute? also the whole notion of identifying with an artificially demarcated place wrapped in a flag is a sure fire way to pledge your brain to the ideologies that control your worldview. america can't seem to get over itself. let's take a breather and denounce the arrogance of humanism and cease with the identifying yourself with any nation state, which by the way where all named by the conquerors.

if you want to have a laugh and eat well stick with bill. he's an organic farmer in northern vermont.
lee was the only lefty who had an under 3.00 era and couldn't get signed by anyone. blackballed due to his extreme criticisms of baseball hierarchy and uncanny ability to get front page coverage with his salvos. how about mark "the bird" fidrych?

Geez.

Reverse racism much?

There are many.

Of course, this depends on your definition of "white." Clark is half Russian Jew.

I, myself, am 1/4 Native American and my son is half Arabic on top of being 1/8 Native American. All white - if you believe what great anthropologists like Dr. William Bass say: there are only three "races," but those are blurring.

Hispanics, Arabs, Europeans (in the traditional vernacular), Jews, etc. are all Caucasion. The southern Arabs and Africans are Negroids and the east Asians are Mongloids. (Not my definition - these are anthropologists definitions based on bone structure, not skin color).

And, repeat, Dr. Bass says they are blending.

And, if you don't know who Dr. Bass is - Google him. His creds are impecible.

Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 12:51 AM by jaredh
Most Latinos are of mixed ancestry so they can't fit into any of the racial categories. The only Hispanics that are fully Caucasian are Spaniards and a small percentage of Latinos.

115. Maybe because American whites don't have anything to fight for.
Or they think they don't, but that's because they think that their government is always gonna be looking after their best interest.
In fact the * govt is only interested in making themselves and their friends richer. Be honest with yourself, It's not about terrorism, values, Iraq, it's all about money (the latest news concernong Halliburton and Iran just proves it).
The new slaves are as white as they are black or hispanic, but as long as the TV is lulling you into believing that you have to go out and spend your money, that one day you will achieve the American Dream, that you will make it to the top, that the terrorists are trying to stop you from working three jobs to pay back that big SUV that you so rightly deserve because they want to abolish the American way of life.
Well the true American leaders will need to be white in order to rouse the majority into realizing what nightmare they now live in, that they are servants to the Man and that there are other things to consider than money, like one another, the environment and the rest of the world.
I would say that Michael Moore and Jello Biafra are precursors of those great leaders to come. If sadly no great white leaders never emerge then the US is in deep s**t.
