I'm going to be a Nielson viewer. List the good shows to watch.
I already watch Jon Stewart, Olbermann, NOW, 60 Minutes, Nightline, Charlie Rose (sometimes).

Please be sure to give me a heads up if anything good is going to be appearing.

She only watches them sporadically. We'll then have 2 more viewers for those shows.

29. American Dreams
NBC at 8:00 Sundays. Well-acted, and has been obliquely AND overtly anti-war (it's set in 1966, and one of the characters just came home from Vietnam). Of course, the ratings are low... no car chases or naked women on the show!

32. Nielson.
A few years ago, I got a Nielson "diary" in the mail Ñ (I don't know what else to call it. It was a book where you write in everything that you've watched on television) Ñ along with instructions on how to use it.

It struck me as a big waste of my time, so I threw it out.

A few days later, someone from Nielson called me to check that I'd received it and to find out how my TV record-keeping was going. I told the woman that I threw it out.

She was shocked! shocked!, I tell you Ñ and proceeded to inform me that I "couldn't do that!"

I told her I'd "already done that" and the diary was long gone.

She blubbered about for a few more minutes and then gave up.

Who the hell do these people think they are?

47. As I understand it, the Nielsens just help networks set their ad rates
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:07 PM by gauguin57
based on what's popular. It's not going to make some executive wake up and say, "WOW, we should all be running shows like 'Frontline.' "

I've been an Arbitron (radio ratings) diarist a couple of times. They sent me a $1 bill in the mail with my diary. Wooo! Thanks for the big paycheck! I flip the dial around so much, it was almost impossible for me to tell them what I was listening to when. And I mostly listen to various public radio/college radio stations, so my diary would have been no use to them, re: the whole advertising rate thing.

51. Watch nothing but trash TV
Find the stupidest shows on TV and watch them regularly. Fuck with the box, in other words. Fight against the corporations that run TV by making their rating statistics meaningless. Then maybe we can get some good quality programing on that isn't afraid to take on the fascist corporate state.

52. The best shows on PBS are Frontline, Wide Angle, and P.O.V.
Nova is good unless they get on a military kick, as they seem to do occasionally.

The BBCAmerica Monday night mysteries are about the only good thing (aside from The Office and an occasional drama special) about that wretchedly fluffy channel.

If I were designated a Nielson viewer, I'd mess with their minds by not watching any Big Three, Fox, or WB TV at all.

59. Without A Trace is not reactionary and very well written --
they do shows that are sympathetic to working poor mothers who have to be drug mules in order to buy hearing aids and glasses for their children and who have to live in cheap motels because they can't afford the security deposit to rent a crappy apartment.

That show deserves good ratings.

61. Disappointing ethics.
I was asked to do the Nielsen thing during the last "sweeps" (a couple of months ago) and I agreed. Having agreed, I felt an ethical obligation to both report truthfully and to not modify my viewing habits in order to skew the polling. If I'd felt that I couldn't do it truthfully, I'd have refused to participate.
